Hi all,

I was wondering what happens when you have been over in OZ for so many years that your UK passport is due for renewel, how do you go about renewing it or cant it be done?

or will it be a case of roles reversal and re-applying for entry into UK? if for some bizzaar reason we dont settle (cant see it like lol)

When I was living in England and needed to get my Irish passport I just applied to the Irish embassy in London so I reckon when in OZ you would apply to the British embassy there to renew it

Hi Mark. I have just gone through this exercise.

You can NOT apply on line because you have to submit a signed application form (C1) plus 2 photos and your old passport - perhaps other documents.

What you can do is download the form from the British High Commission website in Canberra: ukinaustralia.fco.gov.uk/en/passports/renewing-your passport.

This link will give you all the information you require.

Make sure your photographer uses the correct paper as not every country has the same requirements; UK photos must not have any printing embossing or watermarks on the back.

Also make sure your signature does not stray out of the "signature box". Mine did and I had to complete a replacement form.

Processing (in Canberra) takes about 12 weeks. It is cheaper to renew in UK if possible.

Hi Rachiegarlo

Passport application forms can be completed and printed online, but not lodged. You still need to sign the completed application form and lodge it at a post office (or passport office) together with all of the supporting documentation listed on the application form.

Apologies is I misled anybody, totally unintentional. The form completed /downloaded and sent with old passport to High Commission in Canberra. Mental note to self-leave replying to posts until after work...not before.

On the question of Passports, we had our Visa entered in a passport which subsequently expired, so we had to carry both passports to travel in & out. If you go to the Immigration centre in Adelaide, they will put a new Visa page into the new passport for FREE!!!.

So pleased we now have to carry our up to date passports.

The best arrangement is to apply for Australian citizenship as soon as you meet eligibility requirements so as to become a "dual citizen" and thus entitled to both a UK and Australian passport. You can then leave and re-enter Australia on your Aussie passport.
