Where to live around Adelaide

Hi everyone,

This is my first posting and I'd just like to say how much I enjoy reading PIA, I'm really early on in the application process, but I love this site. Infact, PIA is taking over my life! haha. ;)

Anyway, I'm after your opinions really about where to live around Adelaide and the suburbs. I'll be coming over as a secondary teacher and so obviously need to be in an area with decent/good secondary schools. Somewhere a bit lively/easy to meet new people would be good as well. Ideally, somewhere with good transport links too, as I prefer not to drive.

Can any PIA members recommend anywhere, or suggest places? I'm curently reading literature, and researching things on t'internet, but you don't always get a good idea of the place - personal opinions/suggestions are so much better (and more honest!).

Does anywhere spring to mind?

Thanks :)

Welcome to PIA!

There are so many threads about this issue you will need to spend hours reading them all. It can be an emotive topic due to the fact that so many people like their areas.

Like you I am a secondary school teacher. My OH is a primary teacher. We decided that we wanted to open up as many opportunities to ourselves as possible and having driven around in both rush hour and non rush hour that we needed to be about 30 mins from the city in any one direction. We also wanted to be near the beach. And with two children, we also wanted to be somewhere with good bus connections (or as good as you can get here) with other sources of entertainment nearby. Having looked around we decided that anywhere between Hallett Cove to Aberfoyle Park was good for us - which also includes Sheidow Park, Woodcroft, Happy Valley, Old Reynella, O'Halloran Hill, Reynella East, Trott Park etc. We rented in Sheidow Park and that was good for us but bought in Reynella East. It is a smaller suburb than Sheidow with no new developments but suits us.

The way that employment in state schools works here is different than the UK and again there are a number of threads which have information on this issue. Some I have posted on. There are a number of people on here who are teachers like myself, I think Monica K is one, Bodie definitely is as is Nick11 and I know there are others, I just can't remember who they are (sorry). If you have other questions more specific to teaching in Aus that other threads do not answer, then feel free to ask them here or email me on eawarner60@hotmail.com

Good morning

I think you will enjoy Adelaide - its a brilliant city to live in

If you area teacher, I think the school where you will teach is going to influence where you live - what do you know about the system here and the allocation of teaching jobs - or are you going to teach in the private system

In overall terms Adelaide offers you great choices - the Adelaide Hills is one lifestyle, the beach areas are another - the city is also an option

Have a look at the Adelaide Fringe Festival website - that will give you an insight to social events here

Email me on d.hensman@buildadelaide.com.au and I can try to hook you up with friends of mine who can help you - especially teachers

If you have access to TV on sport this week look out for the Tour Down Under - its Lance Armstrong's comeback to cycle racing so will get world wide coverage like the Tour De France and its all based in Adelaide - you will see the scenic areas - especially the Adelaide Hills

Ask any questions and I will try to get you answers

Regards

Dennis

Thanks to both of you for posting replies -it's really helpful!

I'm still gathering bits and pieces of information, but to hear it from a personal point of view is re-assuring. I'm really excited about moving to Adelaide, but obviously, want to make sure that I choose the right area!!

Libby - how have you found settling into the Aussie way of life? Is teaching much different - how have you found the education system? Do you know if you can specialise in a particular age group? Have people generally been welcoming? (It certainly seems it from PIA threads I've read!). I will email you at a later date with a few questions (I hope you don't mind!).

Dennis - I'm not sure about which sector yet, I assumed I'd try and get casual work initially and just a get a feel for a range of Aussie schools and then try and decide. Thanks for the website too, I'll take a look. And I'll watch out for the Tour Down Under! I'll email you too at a later date, it's great that you've got teacher friends, I'm sure I'll learn loads!

Adelaide looks lovely. I was there many years ago (!) on holiday and thought it was great. To live there would be fantastic! Not to mention all that wine on your doorstep :D hahaha!

Thanks again xx

Hi to both you fellow secondary teachers,

Ploughing through all the fantastic info on this site, my heart was warmed to see all the questions that have been flying around my head being voiced on this thread.

I'm a secondary English teacher just at the stage of pulling PGCE transcripts for skills assessment and wonder whether you would mind if I picked your brains as I seem to be following in your footsteps so to speak?
