      Tax return- is this right???

      Hi,

I wondered if someone could confirm is what the tax accountant that we got to do my husbands first Australian tax return has done...... he has taken into account the earnings he made in UK from June until Nov last year (he started work in Aus in Nov last year) why do they take this into account, its totally thrown the figures, we were supposed to get around $5k back as we'd only been here 8 months out of the 12 but now they have taken into account the UK earnings before we arrived here its gone down to practically NOTHING!!!! Is this right?

      Thanks in advance,

      Kerry x

That cant be right, He can only be taxed on what he has earned here. I'd call the taxation dept.

Thats what I thought, I just rang a tax office and thye told me you don't take into account the UK earnings.... god why do we pay these people $150 to do a job they are supposed to be specialists in and they can't even get it right!!!!! Thank god I looked into this, I could have just earnt us nearly $5k....

Now the question is do I go and try a different tax agent or attempt to do it myself?

Has anyone done their own tax return, was it hard?

      Thanks,

      Kerry x

Its really not difficult to do your own tax return...you can do it online...just download the E Tax. But then ours are pretty simple...doint have a huge amount of expenses etc....

There is a helpline you can ring...

Dont know if there is a body who governs tax agents....but if there is, i'd be phoning them up and reporting this agent...as he obviously doesnt know his job properly....
Arrived November 2005........live in Happy Valley

they never asked us about our earnings back in the UK, we used a company called HR Block sure they are not the cheapest in town but they have done us good in the last two years.

Any earnings, interest received, proceeds on capital gains you have made before entering Australia are not liable to Oz tax. Any earnings, interest received, proceeds on capital gains made after you arrived in Australia are liable to Oz tax, this includes interest from money you may still have in the UK, money from UK pension and proceeds from sale of a house in the UK.

You really should look into getting you money back from this guy and paying $150 seems rather steep aswell. Etax is very easy to follow but if this is your 1st return I would go elsewhere and find out about a lot of tax offsets that may be available to you.

The 1st $6000 is tax free, but if you haven't been here a full year this will be reduced, your tax free allowance will be $500 for each month you are here eg we arrived in November 2008 so our tax free allowance for 08-09 was $4000
