Outgoings

Hi all,

Being very boring and trying to work out our outgoings in uk compared to what our outgoings might be in Adelaide to see if we can financially afford the move. What sort of things should be on our Oz out goings? I know you have to pay for schools but not sure what other things you have to pay for compared to the uk. I am rambling now, sorry.

Hi,

Cost of living here is not cheap, especially with the £/$ rate at the moment. Food can seem expensive but the quality of the meat, fruit etc is much better than the UK

However, rental property/rate is compared to the south of england where we came from, around $300-$400 per week for a 3 bed depending on area, again the nearer to the CBD the more expensive.

As for schooling, there are some good state schools which pay between $200-$400 per year per child to help school funds....the only schools you pay for are the private ones which are around $6000 per year per child.

Check out the www.realestate.com.au for properties and www.decs.sa.gov.au in regard to the state schools.

It's very hard but don't convert to pounds when shopping here, once you are paid in dollars try to live a dollar.

You maybe paid £20K in the UK and could be on a wage of $50K over here.

Like Tyke says have a look at previous threads, if you go far enough back you may see how peoples opinions change as time has gone on and the exchange rate changed.

It is not cheap here, don't be fooled into thinking this is Tenerife or Greece 20 years ago!

If you have very well paid jobs in the UK, then you would need to seriously think about the money being paid here in Adelaide, if however you have medium to low paid jobs in the UK then you should be fine over here in Aus.

Do both work now in the UK, and will both work here............. thats the biggie.

Hi

It is expensive here and I am still shocked after 18 months on how much things like my grocery bill costs. It is probably double what I spent in the UK. Something which I didn't expect to spend so much money on was healthcare. The cost of doctors appointments, prescriptions and even immunisations for my children really added up over the first year. I know some doctors bulk bill, but unfortunately mine didn't. It is worth looking into medicare as well before you come out.

Good luck

i find it cheap here in certain things, council tax around $1200 here, uk its double/triple, petrol in uk double, never paid for a doctor yet, always bulk billing, only paid for the specialist when req. I the end its all swings and roundabouts.

You will compare when you first arrive, its natural to do so, but after a year or two of earning $$$ it'll change.

Hi,

I cant help you with how much things are over in Oz, but I'm going through the investigations myself. I have just spoken to an agency regarding a visa and including the application, Assesment, Heath and police checks and then their fee it comes to £6563 just to get visa etc sorted, I wasnt banking on that?!:arghh:
