:notworthy:A question to all the clever people!!:notworthy:

As most bank accounts appear to charge for each time you use a cash card to purchase things during a month after your free usage (one we have looked at is 10 free there after $2 for each use in a month) we have been looking after getting it mentioned to us having a credit card to use for all purchases in a month (each time used its free) and then just settling the bill before interest charged. Now having never owned a credit card here in the uk can anyone advise of an oz credit card that offers good rates of interest and also that has other deals attached to it ie air miles etc

any personal experiences both good and bad most welcome:wubclub:

Hi Ian,

If you intend to pay your card off each month then whatever rate of interest they charge should be irrelevant,a little unclear about your statement about banks charging to use a cash card(debit card),most banks charge a flat monthly fee and you only get charged extra for withdrawing cash from ATM's that do not belong to the bank,

Cheers Keith,

I think the charges maybe because for our house we have an offset account which is part house loan and part bank account, basically the more money in the bank account the lower the balance of the loan that they calculate interest so provides good "interest"

Are there any credit cards that you know provide add ons like air miles and other benefits.

(Will only use in emergency and rest of time keep locked away from wifes shopping trips!!;))

Virgin does a credit card with low interest.

Commonwealth bank does one with low interest.

Westpac

National Australia Bank

ANZ

Adelaide bank

They all offer different types of credit cards, some with no annual fee, but higher interset, an annual fee with lower interest, some do have points programs, but if you are not going to spend a lot this might not be worth it. Google the above banks, they all have info on their site about creditcards they offer.

The other thing you could consider is a line of credit, which can be part of your mortgage or stand aloan. It is a bit like a personal loan, but you only apply once and then you can withdraw as needed.

Westpac charge $3 a month fee - free if you have over $3000 in the account. They charge 60 cents for a statement from the atm. They do charge if you use another banks atm - however most shops where you use eftpos (switch in u.k) offer cashback - so we never really have a problem.

When we first came we had an account with HSBC - they have only one bank in adelaide - so that was a pain!!!!

I'm not sure what the rate is on our CC.Low fees from what I can make out.

BUT - the plus point for us are Fly Buys (similar to the Airmile system).

Our CC is with the National Australia Bank and is linked to the Fly Buy system - giving double points.

Now we do not go out of our way to collect Fly Buys,we just happen to shop where they are given (eg. KMart).I'd not recommend trying to earn the points.

As well as cashing in points for gifts/products you can cash in for shopping vouchers.

We have had 6 X $100 vouchers in the last 12 months - they are similar to a little credit card so you don't have to spend it all at once. You also get more Fly Buys when you are spending with the vouchers. So this pays for any fees and charges :)

Hi Ian,

we opened up a westpac account for everyday banking, it is easy to transfer between westpac and our offset accounts using anypay over the internet, from the offset you can transfer any amount from westpac only $5000.

just got back from our houses, your grass is green, give it another week without water and it will be dead again.

Commonwealth bank, ANZ, Westpac would be the main banks for credit cards, probably not a great deal to choose between any of them. Also advise that you keep UK bank accounts and get a UK credit card, you don't have to use it but after 3 years you will no longer have a credit rating in the UK so having a UK c/c keeps your credit rating options open.
