When coming from the UK the HSBC Bank seems like a good option initially, but firstly there is only the one branch in the city, and secondly customer services is useless. Move to an Australian bank as soon as you can.

We did the same as you, was all a lot easier that way when first arriving, changed banks for convenience more than anything, initially to St George as they had a great local home loans branch which is now closed, then moved to Commonwealth for and still great service.

I still have my UK hsbc accounts, great for buying presents online in the UK plus handy when we go over on holidays.

We did the same and opened a commonwealth bank account whilst still in the uk very easy took 10 mins and they sen the cards to branch in Adelaide and we picked them up on arrival and they showed us how to use Internet banking which is very easy. Kept the uk bank account for ease of ordering things in to and when back visiting been here six weeks and living the dream

Well no...

you don't ever need to go near a bank really:-

The Credit Unions in Adelaide will provide you with all the services you are likely to need (including Insurance;Standing Orders; Cash Passports; International Credit Cards etc etc) and between them they have more Rediteller ATM's than individual banks.

The only time I've been near a bank in the last ten years was to buy some folding cash for a journey to Europe (oh, and yes... to close my Commonwaeth CTB aacoount)
