Plastic bag ban having opposite effect?

I found this article today, and it made me realise that the ban on plastic bags has caused a fairly environmentally unfriendly effect in my household.

Whereas I used to use the freebie bags in which to put my general waste, I now use bin liners.
Because they are larger than the carrier bags I do not fill them up; as by the time they are full, the waste is beginning to smell.
So, I am using larger bags to dispose of the same amounts of waste.

I'm really fastidious with my recycling and have got it down to a fine art; but I can still see the paradox of banning bags to save the environment whilst creating higher usage of bin liners.

Maybe I'll just have a bonfire on the balcony and burn it all. Whilst I'm at it, I could probably do a bit of casual whaling and nonchalant soil erosion.

They did say this might happen but it is possible to buy bin liners that are biodegradable......I think they still take while to break down but nowhere near as long as 'normal' liners.

I wonder what percentage of that statistic might be biodegradable bags? I can hope I'm not the only one that's been suckered into buying more expensive -$4 for 20 bags- bio bags lol!

Hi - I love the fact that Australia seem to be alot more into recycling. We buy the bio-degradable bin bags. We tend not to have so much rubbish now as we too have got recycling into a fine art!

Those bloody biodegradable bags... sometimes they degrade just a little too soon! Got one out of my pocket the other day to clear up after the dog in the park, and noticed in the nick of time that it had started to degrade and I would have stuck my finger through a degraded hole right into something unmentionable!!
