The A to Z of Adelaide suburbs...

Interesting article although i do question the depth of their research a little. Athelstone for example was named by someone who hailed from Helston in Cornwall (hence At Helston) and one of the parks there was named by a Lord Petre, who also did the same for a park near his estate in Essex - Thorndon Park. Funnily enough I grew up not far from Thorndon Park in Brentwood, and now live not far from Thorndon Park in Athelstone.

Great find Tamara. Some very interesting reading there.

Now here's a coincidence. My surname, Mansfield, means 'a breast shaped hill'. Possibly spelt Mamsfield originally as in mammary. My 93yo mother now lives in Port Noarlunga meaning 'the place with a hill'. Quite fitting that she was drawn back to the hill.

Mansfield it far more likely to have originally meant a round field or pasture (breast shape, as you say) rather than a hill. 'Field' was never a typical word to describe a hill.
