The Great Ocean Road is the scenic route and will take about 2 days to drive. The direct route is drivable in a day, but is about 350 miles. My son has just been from Adelaide to Melbourne and back for the Port Adelaide Footy team (Australian Rules) this weekend. They left on Friday, got back on Sunday, late afternoon. Port Adelaide lost by 119 points, so a lot of disappointed adelaidians were traveling home on Sunday.

It's as Hayshake says.
We drove to Melbourne a few years ago on the Great Ocean Road.
It is a terrific drive but to enjoy it you need at least a couple of days - and good weather!!
It rained all the way for us,but we had to travel in winter
Lots to see and do and have a stop at one of the lovely B&B's
We stopped at a lovely place called Port Fairy.
We took the direct route back from Melbourne and did it in 9 hours, hard to keep awake on such a boring road. It's the only time I didn't mind Mrs Tyke pinching me!;)
Shame about the big loss by Port Adelaide!!!

I have been reliably informed by truck drivers that you can do it in 7/8 hours......not the scenic route though!.
