areas to live in?

hi, just spoke to agent about where to live (ideally near the beach) said about henley beach,etc,. his advice was that differant areas are mainly ethnic based ie.greek,italian,english. so a bit of advice please ,were yorkshire ,sport loving,outdoor types who like socialising and having a good laugh and knees up,also a lovely 12 y.o. girl to accomodate (you know what there like)whos dance mad .cheers jay

I think you should put your daughter's future needs first and foremost and find an area populated by several hunky italian lads with rich parents!

It's a toughie that one. Yes there are Greek, Italian areas etc, but dont be swayed by this. We have an 11 yr old daughter and live in the hills, we are not hill folk or hillibillies, we are from Lancashire born and bred and as we are just over the border from you, know what you mean. The hills are beautiful and only 10 mins drive, maybe 15 to nearest beach. Gorgeous views of the city etc from up here. You need to consider the best schools for your daughter and where you will work, how far you are prepared to commute and base your choices around this, rather than which nationality populates the area.

No Diane, near one of the Lebanese mansions with rich sons like the one who owns On The Run and Smokemart.... and the massive hacienda down South at HC. Only kidding. There are pockets of Adelaide where small ethnic groups live but most suburbs are very mixed. Hill Billy, Beach Bum, Southern Beau, Metro man, Docker...the list goes on. Just wait til you get here and have a look around at schools n stuff and then decide where you want to live.

Do you intend to buy or rent? The suburbs around us have a high British population ie: born in the Uk and we have great beaches and affordable houses. Take a look from Hallett Cove to Aldinga (taking in Christies Beach, Port Noarlunga, Seaford etc).

It depends upon where you intend to work and how far you want to travel.

I know some areas have pockets of certain nationalities but it's a lot less intense than the UK, but when your here you'll see if you like the area and you'll know if you feel comfortable.

 

If I was going to move nearer the beach then Henley would be my first choice, nice and central and very classy, but I realise this isn't for everyone and it comes at a price. I do think though unless your a dedicated beach goer then you don't have to be that near the beach, even from the other side of the city it's only 20 mins away, and the eastern, north eastern, south eastern suburbs are probably the most consistantly affluent suburbs. We probably go to the beach to spend a day there no more than 6 - 8 times a year, the weather isn't that hot all the time in summer for me to want to go to the beach, and as the beaches have very poor facilities themselves, you have to take all your gear with you in the car (chairs, windbreaks, shade, surf boards, beach cricket, esky, etc..), so you may probably still drive even from just a few blocks away.

 

I would think about where you work and what you want to do as a family, homes further away from the city offer larger cheaper plots, perfect for home entertaining etc.., nearer the city though you have a wealth of choice of places to go to for entertainment, and over time you or your family may want to explore and go out, then nearly all the better nightspots for youngsters or more mature members of the community are near the city.

 

But have fun looking, there are some great places to live all over Adelaide.

As others have said the ethnic mix of different suburbs is really not that noticeble and definately not an issue. You can get an idea of the ethnic diversity of an area by looking on www.domain.com.au - go to the Property Reports section and enter a suburb name in Suburb Profile, it tells you the top 5 locations of residents who were born overseas. I have looked at a few suburbs and found:

 

The average for the whole of Adelaide for UK born is 9%. Hallett Cove has 13% UK born, the Elizabeth area (21%) and Christies Beach (25%) !!!

 

Payneham has 11% Italian, Pennington 12% Vietnamese, but in all cases the vast majority of inhabitants are Australian born (obviously that will include 2nd generation Italians, Greeks, Croatians, Lebanese, Vietnamese, Brits, New Zealanders etc etc).

That's the joy of Oz - very mixed ethnically and the benefits therein are endless (not just the food!) One of the lovely things about Adelaide is the mix of nationalities ..... it's good to have friends and neighbours from a range of cultural backgrounds.

If you like Henley you might also consider Grange - next suburb - which is nice too.

Henley is a great place to live, what better than a 5 min stroll to the beech to watch the sun go down with a glass of red or a bottle of beer.
