Hi, just wonering if anyone knows much info on the eastern suburbs, I thought i had the area nailed were we wanted to be, friends of ours live in the north, and sugested looking at golden grove and surrounding area, very nice i thought, but it opened up a new can of worms on the eastern side. been looking at Athelstone, Highbury, vista etc all look ok seem to to get a bit for your money, Any info appreciated.
There are basically two main categories to "eastern suburbs".
The one that most people would identify with is the "true eastern suburbs" (the suburbs within 10 kilometres of the city, out Burnside area). Suburbs here include Toorak Gardens, Burnside, Beaumont, Tusmore, Highgate, and a little bit further towards the hills, Belair, Springfield and Skye. These suburbs are consistently the most expensive in Adelaide and have the most glamorous reputation. Quite a few of the big private boarding/day schools are out this way, and also Marryatville and Glenunga High School (two very good high schools).
Then there are the suburbs which are more "north-eastern" suburbs, including Hectorville, Cambelltown, Magill and Athelstone. These, like the Burnside area, are very "green" suburbs - lots of trees, parks, lakes, etc. However, usually much cheaper than the Burnside area (maybe a 3 bedroom house for around the $300 000 mark), and usually further away from the city. The advantage of this pocket of suburbs is there is the "O-bahn", a very fast bus/train thing which connects the suburbs to the city. There are lots of schools out this way too, including Rostrevor Boys College. Athelstone in particular has lots of sporting facilities like basketball courts. Being in this area, you are close to the big northern suburbs shopping centre (Tea Tree Plaza), and also within an easy drive's distance to the ones in Burnside. Also through some of these north-eastern suburbs, the River Torrens winds through, which means lots of scenic walks and wetlands.
Probably best to look at some real estate websites and, if you have children, investigate the schools and sports facilities in each area.
Thanks for the reply Elise, really good info here, were looking at athlestone as prices look ok, some of the other suburbs are way over our budget.
Wow Zippy, that reply was truly an education for me too! Nice one. :D
