Hi All

 

Just a quick question - what makes a house a "courtyard home" I don't see any courtyards in the pictures!

To me, a courtyard conjures up visions of spanish houses with large central courtyards, overlooked by balconies, with a fountain in the middle and a few exotic plants - a place of calm and shade on a hot day.

 

Anything here seems to qualify as a 'courtyard', it is generally a small paved area overlooking the colorbond (metal) fence!To be fair some courtyard homes do have a small courtyard half way along the building down the side, to get a bit more light into them, maybe opening off the master bedroom.

 

There are lots of euphemisms in real estate here, to gloss over the reality, eg

 

courtyard home - no garden

executive home - no garden

low maintenance - no garden

lifestyle - may be near a beach or a cafe

We sit laughing our heads off at the economy of truth and plain Bull**** the Estate Agents come up with here.A couple that spring to mind are'would respond favourably to renovation',=Dump!Another that gives an insight to what some of these Agents think is'Requires SOME:biglaugh: updating,or you can demolish,OR:swoon: simply rent it out!!!!Nice to know it's not fit for the buyer to live in,but perfectly OK for the tenant!

I reckon courtyard home is just a 'sort-of' euphemism for small-ish home.

Anne B is right - it usually means no garden - or maybe just a small strip. It often is a result of subdivision of a larger plot so the homes are often quite close together - ok if your neighbours are civilised! It's ideal if you are renting and don't want a garden to look after, provided it is in a good area, but you need to go and have a good look at the state of the adjacent properties, parking availability and, if you a buying, what the maintenance agreements/fees are for shared areas (driveways etc).

 

I've viewed some really nice ones and some real horrors!

A standard house block is W20m x D30m, a villa block is usually W10m x D30m and a courtyard block is usually W15m x D30m. ( might have got the villa and courtyard back to front but otherwise ...... SIMPLE!)
