Hi there,

im new to this so here goes!!!!!

Myself, wife and two children are hopefully moving to Adelaide mid june.

But we still cant get our head around how long we will need to rent short term furnished accommodation for when we first arrive.

Do we have to rent short term for 12weeks until our shipment arrives??

Or is there any other way around it??

Cheers.

You could send your stuff earlier, and "camp" in the UK with various friends and relatives to shorten the waiting time. Clear your house 3 months ahead of when you want the stuff to arrive here??? That'd be wise - we did that and gained a few weeks on paper but the stuff was delayed anyway (that seems to happen a bit to people so don't bank on the date - annoying!!!!). You'll find it easier to live without your stuff and out of suitcases in the UK than you will to do so here...

Garage sales and giveaways may get you stuff to live with here but 3 months is a long time, for either more expensive short term accommodation or for living with minimum stuff with children...

You will find it difficult to get a fully furnished rental for a such a short space of time, but that's not to say its impossible. We arrived nearly a month ago and we are waiting for our container to arrive from South Africa, which will take another month or so. In the meantime, we have secured an unfurnished rental and bought all of the basics e.g. inflatable matresses, a pation set (which we keep in the house LOL) as well as basic cutlery, frying pan, pots etc. It doesn't cost too much to go this route and I am now quite accustomed to re-inflating my mattress every night before bed (the missus bought it from Cheap as Chips - go figure.)

The good thing is, we come home from work and go for long walks on the beach etc so home (at the moment) is just a place to lay our heads. You have to buy into the adventure of it all. Best of luck

I reckon 4-6 weeks in furnished accommodation would give you enough time to look round and find a longer term unfurnished rental - then you could camp out in that with a few essentials either bought cheap, borrowed (post up on here what you need and we'll all see what we can find!), or found for free off a site such as freecycle until your container arrives.

We too can lend you stuff, just inbox when you get here and we'll lend you what we can. We lived in furnished for 3 weeks then played camping till our stuff arrived...it's character building and actually quite fun to find out how resourceful you can be.

You can also rent anything you need. We were lucky enough to get a 6 month unfurnished rental from day one (we knew the area and had friends to sort it).

Renting that and a house pack until our stuff arrived and cleared customs was cheaper than a short term furnished let. We rented everything from beds to spoons no problem from Argos Rentals. But you can just as easy rent a washer/sofa kitchen stuff.......... whatever you need.

You were lucky getting your stuff so quick. They all say 9-10 weeks for shipping BUT it can easily not leave the UK for a week then dock at Sydney for a week then take 2 weeks to clear customs. I would keep 13 weeks in your head and you shouldn't be too disappointed.
