Christies Beach

Hi,

Just looking at properties on Real Estate, and Christies Beach seems to be so much cheaper than other places near that we have looked at. Would love any info on Christies, as so confused at mo, is their something wrong with the area, does it have high crime, or is it just too good to be true!!

christies beach is nice.... the reason it is so cheap is the fact its so far away from the city, the further away from the city u are the cheaper the houses are, before making any decisions look into ur transport options as at the end of the day do you really want an hour commute to work and back everyday?

We are moving there next month.Beach road does look a bit 'tatty'but the council are going to start spending money on it and they say it will be the Jetty road of the south.We love it anyway,you have the beach,shops,cafes and bars on your doorstep.And 2mins drive to the express way.x

Christies can still have a bit of a reputation with some of the government housing around and this can detract from the area. That said a lot of people believe it's an area on the rise and with such a long stretch of beach it can only improve.

 

I think the key in such areas is just have a look around the close neighbourhood to any house your interested in. There are parts of the area which really are gorgeous and well maintained, with fantastic outlooks to the beach or reserves, then there are a couple of streets where it looks something from a zombie movie. Don't get me wrong, many cheaper areas are the same, where we live is a lovely quiet street with great neighbours, but 10 mins walk away are some government housing where the residents have gratified their own house. This is the attitude which gives some areas a less desirable name.

Christies is a place on the way up. Old size blocks being bought up by developers and putting townhouses on them.

They are going to spend a lot of money Beach Rd even talk of a tram line fron Colonades to the Esplanade.

I would love to live there!

Beach, shopping centre 2 mins away, expressway 2 mins away as well.

To be fair, while it is a fair way out, it's not cheaper just because of its distance to the CBD. Plenty live there and wouldn't live anywhere else, but it still hasn't shrugged off its reputation. Hopefully it will do so with the various redevelopments.

Regarding any talk of a tram line, I'm not sure much will come of that – at least not in the next few years. In the consultation brochure produced about the Noarlunga TOD and in the 50+ page detailed scope to 2040, there isn't a single mention of trams. It's been talked up by local traders/business development people, but one of them also said that he couldn't see why a jetty and marina couldn't also be built and it was only the dollars stopping all this ... I think the second part of his sentence clears up the first part!

On a related matter, we hadn't been to Glenelg for ages and when the weather was nice a couple of weeks ago we went for a stroll around there. tbh, we were a bit shocked at how much retail space is unoccupied. At least a dozen shops on Jetty Road were empty and quite a few 'for lease' signs up on those that are open, so I'm not sure I'd hope too hard for a 'Jetty Road of the south' right now! Perhaps the warmer months will see some take up!

How long does it actually take to get into the CBD from Christie's Beach normally and in rush hour? I know I can check google or whatever but I don't trust the times they quote.

We have said in a short term rental in Christies beach. We too read and were told how bad this area is. WELL, yes it has graffiti, but so does everywhere else, sadly even Mawson Lakes is starting to get some. But other than that we have no other negative reports on the area. Great beach, friendly people, close to shops and everything you need. Transport centre with train to the CBD and buses to just about everywhere. I cannot comment on the local SA schools as our kids go to Cardijn. We like it so much we have chosen to stay in the area but sadly no houses we liked came up for rental in the time we were looking so are moving to Seaford Meadows. There are nicer places, but you pay for them. As other have said, things are being tidied up, the beach from has had a face lift, with a little building left to do. The pavements, fencing and others are being dont now. The surf club and sailing centre are brand new and open to non members certain times of the week. So look through to graffiti and everything is good.

Hey, this is useful thread! We too have been looking at Christies beach, my husband will be working at ASC, is it about an hour travel, would appreciate a bit of info from anyone who lives in the area, thank-you!! We received our visas today and arrive soon! x

You know I really don't know why Christie's Beach gets such a bad rap. when I lived in Oz back in the 70's I went to school at Christie's Beach Primary and I found it fine - good teaching principles and good kids. there were the rough ones but you get them in any school.

 

As for the area it was fine and the people were also okay.

 

Has it changed in the years since I have been away?

Christies Beach is fine. I think people have an opinion here even though some have not been there for years or are repeating hearsay. Either that or there just snobs. Year you have a few shaks but you do everywhere. it's a really quiet area in my opinion.

People say such things about any perceived area not as good as their own.. Almost as if they are trying to over justify their own choice.

Christies Beach did have a bad rep at one time and it takes some shaking off. As said by others it could be the next "In" place for buying.

 

No one has mentioned that there was the arrival centre for the 10 Pound Poms in the early days, the Aussies say that is what made it rough down there :biglaugh:

If you came from an inner city terrace house in the Midlands or North your perception may be a little different from that of somebody who grew up in a rural village in Kent or Somerset for example. Good and bad in both extremes - I've seen plenty of rundown and neglected council houses quite close to 5-6 bedroomed commuter house in the 'stock-broker belt' and beautiful little 2 up, 2 down renovations and cottages in areas I may not have considered at first glance.

I do 90% agree with this statement, but what I struggle with sometimes is we dismiss some areas based on a soiled opinion, but actually live in an equivalent or lesser socio economic area but under a pretence it's somewhat better. I do think if you came from a wealthy suburb in the UK, then nowhere has the same feeling in Adelaide, I think even the best of Adelaide has a slightly worn and lacks that feeling of class, that said the very worst areas are no-where near as bad as the worst areas in the UK. I wouldn't walk through Alum Rock in Birmingham, but wouldn't worry about going for a run through Elizabeth or Hackham.

 

The 10% I disagree with is, there are equally or worse inner city / town estates all around the country, probably the worst of which are in the home counties.

I've lived in a mixed bag of areas both good and bad.

 

Before we came over here, we looked at several area's and Christies Beach was on our short list and like you have had there was mixed reactions.

 

We moved from Swindon in Wiltshire from a semi, which was on a not bad road that led into a rough estate. The road we lived in was grouped in as this area so you could not get the house price you wanted no matter how nice the house was. You used to hear the police cars going up and down, which I nicknamed the Pinehurst taxi. Never had any trouble apart from that.

 

Got here 18th Jan 2010 and our short term was in some holiday units on Gulfview Road which were lovely and then moved into the next street (Grundy Terrace). We rent a "shack" that was built by a carpenter for himself 50 years ago and still in not bad nick. Older people in our section of the road but they all talk and we all help each other. First thing I noticed was that we did not hear police sirens. There are some lovely houses here and some pretty bad ones that I would not put a dog in. Everyone will always have their opinion e.g meals at a restaurant.

 

To us it feels like a seaside village but we are happy with that. Shops on Beach Rd feels pretty much like they did in our nearest shopping area in UK. Just feels like UK 20 years ago. The eldest goes to Christies Beach Primary and loves it and the youngest is about to go there too. Spend a lot of the time on the esplanade / beach with bikes etc.

 

I don't drive so either walk, bus or train. 40 minutes into Adelaide. 5 minutes on bus to Noarlunga and 25 minute walk.

 

We would love to buy in this area but cannot get a house with land that is in our price bracket as they are all subdividing.

 

To sum it up, nice little village feel with good community spirit, not heard any trouble since we have been here, just hear the odd party every now and again, odd hooner(which I think most people get) and probably one of the best areas I have lived in.

I think this is one of those times it's good to be new to the area

 

What I mean by that is, if you listen to people who have always lived in the south you will (imho) find that they generally consider the area rough as guts.....but that doesn't mean that it is nowadays.

 

Reps live long here and it can be a bugger to shake them but migrants can look at the place the way it is now, without the baggage of what the place used to be like back in the day.

 

So, go look for yourself. Treat opinions as just that and make your own mnd up by making the same sensible checks you would when getting a place anywhere, here or in the UK. And as some have already pointed out, you can get inconsiderate/rough/downright feral neighbours just about anywhere just as you can get friendly/houseproud/considerate ones!
