Rick and I have just today returned from a weeks cruise on a houseboat from Griffens Marina at Blanchetown to Cadell and back. It was superb, the boat (Scamp - a 4 berth) was comfy and spacious, and had everything on it that you could possibly need for a decent, relaxing break.
Don Griffen was fantastic, down to earth and really laid back. We would highly recommend hiring a houseboat from him. We certainly will next year. Murray River Houseboats |River Murray Hire Houseboats Griffens Marina Blanchetown, South Australia
The weather was perfect, the river was so quiet that at one stage we hadn't seen another person for three days, there were plenty of great parking places along the river, and the fishing was OK!
We recommend stopping at Donald Flat Lagoon and Mirbpook Lagoon. We found lots of wombat burrows at Mirbpook - which were in use judging by the amount of fresh diggings there (and wombat poo!), which I was really chuffed about (the burrows, not the poo ). Saw lots of roos, fantastic birdlife and caught a dozen or so carp. Didn't stop at Morgan, but it looked fine from the river. I think it might get VERY crowded in summer though when all the boats are out and the shacks are full of holiday makers. Some of the shacks are amazing - million dollar homes in abundance.
We discovered the joys of cooking on a bonfire on the river bank, and hubby had the best birthday ever with a bonfire, jacket spuds and steak cooked on it, and him playing guitar and singing while we cracked a bottle of champers!
It is a lovely, quiet stretch of the river and was well worth the visit.
Highly recommended by the Blands!
