Another car question - reversing cameras...

Another car question from me... we're hopefully getting our iMax on Monday and our friends who have one also highly recommend a reversing camera. We're currently looking into that.

The dealer we are buying from do Auto Extreme Electronics cameras. looks good n all that but its $900 (and our friends paid similar). Which if that's the price it is, that's the price it is and we will have to make our decision. But FIL reckons they are avail for around $200.

I did a search, not come up with a great deal yet except one mob who come to your place to install them (different brand) for $250.

Just wondering if anyone else has one of these, how much you paid, and who you got to install it for you?

      Thanks!!!

Learn to drive and turn your head and save $900.

Edit to say, if it's not a factory fit option - do they install a screen on the dash, or do they put a fancy rear view mirror in?

I don't have one in my car but I got a hire car not that long ago and it had one in it. They are really good, especially for the cars that are higher off the ground which this one was. It gives a great view and I found it really helpful when backing out of the driveway.

      Thanks Kris and Diane!

Yes, thanks Leigh, I can drive, and have never had a car with a reversing sensor before but this one is more like a van, actually pretty much IS a van, and comes with the sensor. As its so high up I was wondering whether the camera might be good so investigating re: price. :) I accept that any sort of thread of this nature is always going to draw silly comments and am fine with that. Though as its public knowledge I crashed 10 days ago - first crash ever and never even had a speeding ticket before, bear that in mind before having a laugh at me ok??!!!! :) That sort of thing works better in person than black and white. :)

Oooo hope and everyone else you are alright after the crash If you posted about it elsewhere I must have missed it, sorry.

I've driven all sorts and tbh you do learn to adapt to the vehicle usually pretty quickly. Parking larger ones I find ok, as is reversing as usually they don't have a long bonnet like cars and are flat backed also, so no sticking out boot or anything like a saloon. Once you learn where the turning point is for parking and reversing, as in you work out the distances with the sides/other vehicles etc it becomes like driving a normal car. Well, it does for me anyways ;p

Practice parking, reversing and so on for a while without any distractions in there with you. No children, music and so on. Drive it round the block, come back, park, take it out again and go the other way and so on.

Can't comment on the cameras as never used them. We have sensors on our current car and it drives me bonkers having it bleep at me when things are fine. Hopefully if you use it it'll feel ok and you'll get used to them soon enough :)

Thanks yes, I did really like how the car handles, and am not worried about the physical feel of it reversing or turning but a number of others (inc my uncle who I spoke to earlier) have the cameras and swear by them. He has a 4x4 and fitted his own a few yrs ago and says he wouldn't be without it. Guess we will look for prices and see how we go.

I was only posting in jest. Although don't understand the cameras, I have driven transit vans without rear windows so had to reverse into spaces using only the wing mirrors with no issue at all. So would find better things to spend the money on. But as I say, it was light hearted. Glad you are ok after the accident.

Yes thanks no harm done. We have young children for one thing, and as it is our main vehicle will be in lots of places where there are children, etc. Interesting other drivers we know have them and swear by them so that's a good enough sayso for us to want to look into it properly. Driving it I did wonder whether we really needed one, the mirrors were great, and there is a lot of window. But as it is so high up there is always going to be visibility missing when reversing.
