Holiday car needed

:rolleyes:Hi there, Im in Adelaide for 8 weeks from 22/01/15 to 09/03/15. I'm looking for a road worthy car, for that short time. It must be registered and all set for the road for 8 weeks. I'm willing to pay $300/400 for the rental and then return after use.

I'm sure theres a second car sitting idle for those few weeks, so plese let me know A.S.A.P.

Hi Stephen ......I'm not sure how much luck you will have with this.....someone would need specialised insurance to be covered to rent out their car.

 

fully comp insurance here together with rego payments probably costs $150-200 a month anyway.

 

there are some places that rent cars at reasonable rates that are recommended on here, no sure of details but someone will know, might be better to look at them

As Claire says - no one will rent out for such a small amount due to the costs of rego / insurance and wear and tear.

 

You will have to face the fact of paying the going rates I'm afraid.

 

If by any infinitesimally small chance someone did offer - the vehicle will probably be unsafe...............

A "Cheap" commercial rental will be around $30 per day.

Thinking.....Put the driver down on the insurance as a named driver for the weeks required, do not tell them the car will be hired out, no problem there, as long as the person driving the car has a licence all will be good, the insurance company will want to see the licence. It will just like a family member or friend from overseas borrowing your own car.

Friend of the owner of the car...simple, no moneys exchanged hands, no worries, if one is worried don't bother or get a bond

There is also a company called Car Next Door which operates out of Sydney and Melbourne and that's much more about privately owned vehicles being loaned out, so if anyone has a car that is not being used and is interested in the OP's offer, it might be worth getting in touch with Car Next Door and checking out the insurance implications

The car-next-door rates start at $25 a day, most are $35+ tho, and there is a km charge on top so works out more expensive than regular hire company. Not sure of the costs compared with earnings if you are the car owner, there are insurance and rego implications to take into account as well as the cost to use the service.

 

The go get company you have to be a member of, a minimum of about $50 a year, with that level membership the car hire starts at $80+ dollars a day

 

I would not chance "hiring" my car to someone and letting the insurance co think it was being lent to a friend.....too many things to potentially go wrong.....if there was even a minor accident there is a good chance that your insurance co would find out, if, worse case scenario the "borrower" manages to crash the car killing themselves what then?....apart from potentially being seen as the persons only friend/relative inAustralia, you may very well find yourself being accused by the persons family of hiring an unroadworthy worthy car etc etc.....

 

TBH I think if you need the use of a car, you safest options are......to hire one off of a legitimate hire company or look at buying a second hand car if you are here for a while and selling it when you leave.

All too true Claire, with the borrower high-tailing it out of the country leaving the borrower to face all the s#!t paying excess's etc and a chance of not having a car. All too risky for my liking.

We used to borrow family's car when on holiday in the UK, it always felt a little uncomfortable doing so and worrying if something happened and how it would effect their on-going premiums, sure enough something did happen, some one unknown pranged it in a car park. I paid for repairs and went to hire cars from then on, boy what peace of mind that is.

As said previously, have a friend buy one that's going to get you to wherever you need to go and then sell it when you leave. Chances are you'll get back near enough what you paid for it.

So who does the car get registered to? if this mysterious friend, then 3rd party injury claims would be on them, there is also the cost of rego plus other insurance, which one can assume the driver will take out, but at what level and what excesses, any problems would more than likely come back on to the registered owner!

 

The OP would, from their post, we can assume no family or friends in Adelaide otherwise they would be sorting it out for them would they not?, so really one would be dealing with a complete stranger. So my advice to the op would be to buy a car once they are in OZ (not unlike what some backpackers surely do), this could be researched beforehand, and take up all the required insurances for the peace of mind for themselves as well as others.

Yes, you can buy a car on a temp visa with a uk drivers licence. I've seen a few people say you can't, but you can. I had three different cars before I had pr or a SA licence.
