Hi all

We fly in 3 weeks and our shipping is going on Tuesday. I thought 2 v large suitcases and 5 large plastic boxes would be plenty.

All of a sudden EVERYTHING seems to be essential!! Need another two boxes probably.

We started packing yesterday and have gotten divorced 3 times already :arghh:

Going to have to ditch the clothes that don't fit anymore but really like :embarressed:

What a blooming nightmare. Have written extensive lists for packing and as you go through your drawers and cupboards for packing, the list suddenly is obsolete.

Anyone out there thinking they don't need much? Think again!

See ya at the November meet (if we can find it!) Cant' wait xxx

I'm sure my partner and I have underestimated how much we own. We are currently renting in the UK and most of the furniture isnt ours, so we've not got to think about shipping furniture. But I still think we've underestimated how much junk we have. We may need a skip on our drive before we leave!

OOoo I have a feeling we will be exactly the same!

We've got rid of furniture, going to ship telly/computer/bikes etc and just pack the rest- OH seems to truly believe all of his belongings from our 2 bedroom house will fit in one suitcase!! He insists thats all hes taking. I of course im looking at all of my clothes, shoes, bags but also bedding, towels, kitchen equipment, knick-knacks like vases etc...and thinking oh my god!! So packing should be an ...interesting experience!!!

HAHAHAHAHAH!!! Ye!. We are now divorced 10 tmes! If you add up what you THINK you'll take, add another two boxes. We have (an extra 60 quid).

Just worried now that we will have too much weight for the plane as laptop, jewellery and small but expensive electrical gadgets are coming with us.

Tell you what tho'. I don't know how people go to Oz, back to UK then go to Oz again do it. It's been the most STRESSFUL experience of my life! Only do it once me thinks.

Hi Jane,

Just got here Sept and remember how stressful it was packing up. Whatever you bring wont be enough, and day to day the dress is very casual anyway. Saying that is should be hot when you get here, as its getting warmer and forcast good for the weekend. We attended the Oct meet up and everyone we meet were great, really friendly with great info and advice, so nothing to worry about their. Take care and hope your moves goes well. Deborah

Hiya,

Afraid you'll miss the Nov meet. It's the first Sunday of every month so you should make the Dec one. Have a look at the socialising forum, all details of meets and such are on there.

Good Luck to you all.

Hi Nicola, I am in the process of deciding wether to take a container or not. I had a quote on a full one, spent a week clearing out and giving/ selling furniture away.....really chuffed with my de-cluttering, seemed to get rid of half a house............ called them to come back to re measure and the guy says to me ' what have you done just swapped things around !!' I wasnt impressed as to say I cleared a mountain of toys and furniture is an understatement. ( husband didnt notice a thing !! observant as ever !).......... so he re measured at 750 cbc feet and was a bit cheaper..... anyways I'll stop babbling now, I wanted to check if you were doing a shared container with the amount of stuff you have 540 cbc feet. I am still convinced half a container is enough for us but he thinks not.

We are on a temp visa and only have 2 years left so I am at the point of meltdown, as unsure wether to leave furniture at parents and come over with an extra £4000 in our pockets and start a fresh and rent a furnished.

Hiya

Depends on how old your furniture is. If it is fairly old £4000 would replace it in Oz and you would't have the hassle. Plus the houses tend to be bigger. We've never had a king size bed for instance and you can usually fit one in a unit over there.

My OH's Mum emigrated 20 years ago and she took everything, regretted it ever since. Plus, a furnished rental is way more than unfurnished cause they are usually short term for ex-pats and holidays.

Our furniture is all over 10 years old so we are just taking the things that matter. Plus bedding, as apparently it's quite expensive over there. OH is sending his hand tools (carpenter). We have 7 large plastic boxes with lids and 2 HUGE suitcases. Cost £460.

Hope this helps a bit.

Jane

I phoned quite a few for quotes and the 'excess baggage company' were the best. Not quite the cheapest but very professional and efficient. Loopy Lisa used them too and I think she has been pleased with them.

We live in Leicestershire and they arranged for TNT to collect the boxes. Today in fact.

It is a door to door service and they provide the boxes, crates etc in with the price. We used our own though as we will be able to re-use them for storage at a later date. They also have a tracking service so you will be able to see where your stuff is.

Have a good think.

Hi ras, yes we got shared container, they set 540 and when packed up near as dam it was right!, we have used dorre bonner they have been reccommended on here a dew times. I wanted to take things for childrens sake, most of it is theirs most of ours is just furniture but quite expensive and seen as houses are bigger over there it will make a start on furnishing house. I have looked at cost I things over there an some things seem quite expensive like mattresses and childrens furniture, but what we don have we are gonna sour e on gumtree or along those lines!, it cost us sox 2700 with ins for 10k just in case. Hope this helps, when are you leaving, do you know where you are going to settle?

Hi Stephen, exciting times ahead, don't think I am nearly prepared but just going with the flow at the moment, it seams very surreal I don't know about you but feel like I have lived and dreamed this time coming or 2 and half years.

Where abouts are you staying? we are staying at one of Tmara's houses in Chrisities beach for 3 weeks, then hopefully a more permanent base.

Nicola
