Brining My Mercedes Car To Australia...Should I or Shouldn't I?

Hi AllI drive a Mercedes S Class CDL 3.2, it is now 8 years old and has 103000 miles on the clock. I am torn between leaving it here and selling it or bringing it with me as I understand there is a strong demand for deisel cars. It's in excellent condition but just a little old (just like it's owner). As it is out of it's manufacturers warranty, I have an independent warranty from a reputable company and I get it serviced in a Mercedes specialist garage; which is far cheaper than a main dealer. Does anyone know a Mercedes specialist in the Hallet Cove area (not main dealer) that could service my car using real Mercedes parts and is there a company in Oz that offers warranty cover for older cars? I'd appreciate your opinions as to whether I should bring this car with me, it's got plenty of life in it still. Alternatively does anyone know where I could buy a decent second hand Mercedes, again not a main dealer but perhaps a used car dealer specialising in Mercedes / BMW's etc. (Sorry about all of the questions)Thanks R & H

Hiya just asked the other half, he thinks you might be in luxury car tax category with a Mercedes that's on top of import duties, & possibly GST too. Not certain but worth checking. Have a look at likely second hand value on redbook online. Good luck.

Well worth doing luxury car tax kicks in at $67000. When did you purchase it. Taxes payable are not related to depreciation. It is worth you paying for a valuer here if you bring it in as they will determine an acceptable customs value - so say it is worth £18000 in the UK you might get it valued for £10000 here customs value. My valuation cost me $150.00 for the car(s) i brought in.

Hi, cars do cost alot of money here to buy. You could check out the oz website for values on www.carsales.com.au to compare with the sale price in England to what it would cost to buy here. Europeon car parts and service can be very expensive and parts not always readily available. My OH works for Repco authorised repairer, which gives nationwide warrenty on service/repairs. He is at Blackwood not far from Hallett Cove. Warrenty are available to buy, but I believe only on cars up to 10 years old. Hope that helps!

Check out Iron Chefs threads in transport and shipping over on our sister site, poms in Oz. he has two, one on importing a car, another one for is it financially viable to import your car (give make, model etc and get an honest answer).

 

One thing, does it have good working aircon? I'd want a car with aircon when driving in Aus.

You have to degas the aircon for shipping and my Passat wasn't terribly happy after 3 months standing with no R134a in it and protested when we tried to recharge it. Fortunately it did clear then took the gas. The other way is an aircon certificate @ an extra £600.00
