Shipping my car.....

Hi everyone

 

I've been looking at car prices over there and they seem quite expensive, against what we'd get for our two cars over here so I've been thinking of shipping my car over (at the moment we are only using part of a container for shipping)

I think it would be a cheaper option but the thing I'm worried about is I have a Renault Scenic and from the times I've been there I don't remember seeing many Renault cars at all?? If anything went wrong with it whilst there could it prove expensive to get sorted especially if it was a specialized part needed, I'm sure with most parts they would be universal but I know with Renault they sometimes use specialist parts, are there any Renault dealers over there? Any advice?

Does the car you intend to ship have decent working air con? That would be a big factor for me taking a car to Aus.

my partner has been importing cars for a while from the uk so I asked him for you.

Yes there are Renault dealers over here and Renault breakers, if it was a specialized part that could be freighted than that would be a cheaper option due to past experiences or most if the time they will match the price of the part u found in England.. So make sure u u check the uk prices first , but I really wouldn't worry about a scenic.

I've seen a couple of threads on shipping cars and the costs can add up. We were thinking about bringing ours as my wife thought we would have space in a 40 foot container - I don't have photos but we wouldn't have had space for a toy car in the end.

 

In the end, we decided to sell the car and buy something cheap and short-term when we got here - this freed up some extra cash too. Only time will tell if we've done the right thing as we've no warranty or guarantee. You can pick up something on gumtree.com.au - remember, older cars with high mileages are much more common here.

Just remember that any imported car has to go an inspection by the ministry of Transport. This includes mud on the underside of the vehicle so it will need to be professionally steam cleaned first. Also, I think it might be prudent to contact our MoT and see if there are any mechanical issues that need to be sorted. Some cars are defected for a simple thing like the rear brake light covers are not up the Australian standards. Strange but true.

BTW, cars are not as dear as every one thinks. Don't do a pound/dollar comparison as our standards of living are soo different. Try to work it out by using a percentage of you salary instead.(not easy if you don't yet have a job of course.)
