Importing a car from uk

Hi

i want to import my wife's Mini Cooper s into Adelaide and I have obtained a vehicle import licence from Canberra so it can go in the container however does anyone know what else I have to pay on its arrival in Adelaide I know it has to be steam cleaned and valeted clean or customs will do it and charge me but it was more the fees to get it out of customs and to register it so we can drive it. The mini is 10 years old

Customs charges

Modification charges to met Aussie standards if required

Registration

Import approval application

 

Some of the above might be included by your shippers quote. For my Mondeo all the above adds up to about $7,500.

But you can easily get 91, 95 and 98 ron fuel so there won't be any issues.

 

Worth knowing though as you wouldn't want to put 91 in a car tuned to 95 too often.

what you will need is Australian child seat restraints for the rear seats......./ one of regencys big things ....(regency.. is the place you will have to take it to get it inspected.. ) you will be able to drive it still on British plates to have it inspected and get it from the importers yard but it will cost you about $50. per permit. per trip.. properly easier to get the parts in the uk... and cheaper.

you may need a new rear parcel shelve..!

Regency is a nightmare to deal with - well worth avoiding if you can.

would highly recommend using ironlady imports, they have just imported my car over and they are brilliant. They take all the pressure and stress away, there is alot involved with customs, valuation,get etc invloved and i have found it stress free using them, well worth the money

Hi, i was thinking about bringing my VW Golf in and when i got to about $8000 AUD in costs I gave up as it was no longer worth it.

i called Motor Registration when last in Adelaide and they said that it would not be able to be driven on the road until it was modified, even if the only modification was the car seat restraints (as the golf has isofix, irrespective of whether you need a child seat or not), so i would need a tow to get the mods done etc. Speak to someone else and you get a different story. I've written to several places to try and get a better idea of other costs, but no one seems to want to commit so I am struggling. I looked up the equivalent of my car on a few car sales websites to get an average price, but i understand you need to pay for a valuation. below is the extract from the spreadsheet i was trying to build to cost out, you can see there are still a lot of blanks.

 

I'm no expert, but trawled through all of the guidance received from shipping quotes etc and this is my best guess

No they ALL have to have a full inspection. Put it this way: I've lived in Adelaide all my life, deal with Regency at least once every week, and STILL pay someone else to take my cars through. It really is THAT bad. As someone fresh into Australia from the UK, trying to do it yourself is extremely unwise.

Why would you ever bother? Theres enough hassles getting here without making more for yourself. I know some people see their 1965 Austin Rover Fiat Super Rare XL as part of the family but you're bringing in a pretty standard car. My biggest fear wouldn't be the initial costs but rather the fact that when you want to sell it, its now a foreign car with (as far as a local would see) an untrackable or unknown history hence worth less than an Aussie one.
