Travel insurance

We thought we had travel insurance organised for our one way flight to Adelaide until we read the small print which implied that routine travel insurance wouldn't cover us for a one way flight for emigration purposes.

Has anyone else every looked into this and if so what sort of travel insurance did they take out, and with whom, in order to be properly covered? We are a healthy family but you worry about someone getting sick during the flight and ending up in hospital in Singapore, which would cost a lot of money.

We have been wondering about this too. I did get a flyer with the westpac banking information package for a company called 'Go Walkabout' www.go-walkabout.com

They do a one way basis travel insurance but we have not checked it out yet!

Hi Carole,

Thanks for the info. We gave them a ring and they were really helpful. We also rang around other brokers etc but none were as well informed. We've booked cover for a family of 4 and it cost £120.

Apparently the problem with ordinary travel insurance is that if someone gets ill enroute they will be repatriated to where they originated from. So for example, if you got appendicitis and ended up in hospital in Asia and missed your connecting flight to Adelaide, you would be sent back to the UK. Whereas this cover would pay for you to fly on to meet up with your family in Adelaide. Otherwise your family would have to pay to return to the UK as well. You'd all then need to pay for new flight out to Oz.

I know it's a pain having to fork out more money given that we're all spending a lot already but at least it would help ease the stress if something went wrong.

Thanks for the info it was a great help.
