Health cover for 457 & to avoid MLS

I'm confused!

Me and my husband need overseas visitors cover until we land in Australia for our 457 visa but we also need different cover to avoid the MLS as we are over the threshold.

I've looked at quite a few but wondered if others had experience.

I'd thought about budget cover with IMAN for the 457 and then cancel once we get our medicare card, with possibly Nib or HCF for cover to start once we've arrived in Adelaide to avoid paying the MLS. The other option is visitors cover + extras and reciprocal health cover with members first (mutual community & HBA) but we can't then cancel the visitors cover and have the reciprocal cover as a stand alone policy.

Any advice much appreciated!

Christine

Most companies offer a policy called overseas visitor cover for people going on a 457 but this isn't the right policy to avoid paying the extra tax if you earn over a certain threshold. The policies for avoiding the tax don't always meet the requirements for the 457! Insane!

The policy for the 457 can be cancelled once you are in the country and have registered with medicare.

Hi,

not sure of the threshold, but tbh,

i would seriously have the best cover you can afford........dental care can be hugely expensive, and then you really should have ambulance cover.....it isnt covered by medicare!!

SA ambulance cover is reasonable..........or you can add it to any insurance cover you get.

Having had a scare last year, i was gobsmacked to find we didnt have hospital cover and had to pay quite a bit to pay for the gap!! Suffice to say, we now have full insurance; costly but the peace of mind is worth a heap more to me!!

Hi, we just got a two month travel lnsurance that covered us from the date of the visa request and once you are here you can sort out the health insurance. You are entiltled to reciprical emergency health care at any government hospital, just take your passport.

That was enough to satisfy immigration for us.

Reciprocal cover with your Medicare card doesn't cover you for everything and things like ambulance cover will be needed. I don't know about the tax stuff as I'm covered by a global policy with work.

We just bought a 28 day policy from Walkabout Ins in the UK designed to cover the 457 requirements. Don't recall the cost but it wasn't expensive. In the first month we then bought ambulance ins for around $80 for the family and we use the Medicare reciprocal for the normal doctor stuff. There no medical problems in the family so apart from dental and having to buy glasses for my youngest its just the same as the UK.

I'm on a 457 visa, we have Ambulance cover (a must) and we just use our Reciprocal Medicare card. OH recently diagnosed with an illness and she had to visit Doctors, Specialist, blood tests etc and spend time in Hospital. I was expecting massive bills etc but we got most of the costs back through Medicare. Usually pay $65 to see the Doctors, then claim back $35 through Medicare. Also once you see the Doctor about an illness then the next time you visit him for the same illness you don't pay.

At the weekend we looked into getting Visitors cover with extra's (for Dental cover mainly) and they quoted $400 a month and most things we had to wait 12months to claim on, the women advised us to wait until we get PR then the cost goes down to less than $200/month with all the extra's.

April next year we will have been here 2years, so we can apply for PR then.

You've got to look at the cost of $400/month for 12months ($4800) You would have to be seriously ill to warrant that cover. With all the problems that OH has had since November last year we haven't spent more than $400 total on Medical bills.

All this has me well confused my wifew, daughter (4) and I are wanting to get over as soon as poss just the small problem of a house and the rather weak pound still where there's a way and all.

If you have 175 and PR and all that how does that differ from 475 cover? Will I have to pay less? Can anyone give me a rough monthly health care insurance cost including abulance.

Many Thanks in advance

Nige

Sorry for being so thick!
