Anyone living in the Victor Harbor area? We would like to socialise a bit more.

in uk at mo but looking to return to oz to give it another try, came back after 2 months! Visited victor harbor for a couple of days & liked it there, but whats the situation with employment opportunities & rentals etc? Why did u pick vh?

PS Have u thought of bowling? Seemed very popular when we were there

We have been in SA for 3 years. If the children weren't settled would have definitely moved to Perth by now. However, house prices are much higher over there and it is difficult to get big back yards ( a necessity for us). My children would never forgive me if I took them out of school again.

My hubby is in the mining industry so it doesn't really matter where we live as he flies in and out. He just has a fortnightly or 4 weekly trip to the airport. It depends on trade or qualifications are as to whether there are jobs in Victor. Most tradesmen would find work, the tradesman down here charge extortionate prices, so anyone coming in slightly cheaper would have loads of work. Teachers, hairdressers, care workers are all in demand. If you me with what you do, I can probably give you a better idea.

We didn't really choose Victor Harbor, we were living in Yankalilla but the school is rather feral and the children got badly bullied. The nearest schools were Victor Harbor and because of the long drive we ended up moving down here. You could always commute to Adelaide depending on your circumstances. However it is a bit of a hike plus with escalating fuel prices could get costly.

There is nothing in Victor Harbor, except for a tiny antiquated cinema and some quite good gyms and restaurants. However the new complex is apparently going ahead providing huge cinema, shopping complex with all the big stores, bowling, restaurants etc. That will make a huge difference to both the town and jobs. Housing market is totally stagnant here so great time to buy. I know somebody that did 5 open days last week and didn't get a single person through any of them. Apparently still quite buoyant in Adelaide.

Victor is a lovely place to live we just need to have more facilities, which we are hopefully getting. Schools are fantastic, we have been really impressed.

SA is certainly not as social or community orientated as WA. Adelaide is called the city of churches and we have found religion quite dominant here in SA generally. Everybody we know seems to be a member of a different church group. This is not a problem of course, but we are atheists so you don't necessarily want to join those social groups.

I think Adelaide is so full of Brits now it is much easier to find people on your wave length, whereas in Victor you are more isolated. I have lots of lovely friends from the children's schools, but again am not religiously inclined. A lot of socialising revolves around your church, so not our cup of tea. We have plenty of friends in Adelaide but it is such a long way to travel.

Will eventually catch up with you this week. Hospitalised twice this week as you know, still feeling rough. Can't believe you were so close to us in UK. Terry has had to fly back to work this morning but will grab a coffee with you all this week. It's really nice that more Brits have moved or are considering moving to Victor Harbor. It's great to have a friendly faces about and support.

We are going to put in an offer on a house in Hayborough and would value any advice on living in VH. Do you know when the new shopping centre will be built. What are the disadvantages. Our family are grown up so it is just my husband and I. We would only be looking for casual or voluntary work.

We are moving to WA in 3 weeks. Not sure when the shopping centre is going to be built, you could email Victor Harbor council for more info. I don't think we have found any disadvantages of living in Victor, would appreciate a few more shops just because we sometimes have to travel to Noarlunga for kids clothes etc. If you are coming in your position just the two of you then you will probably enjoy it. SA in general is a little behind for our liking but Victor Harbor is a very lovely town. The only other disadvantage is that it is a tourist destination so triples its size in summer. Also it hosts schoolies week but that is bearable for the weekend.

As you can see below it is becoming more popular with Brits, so it is nice to have a friendly face to greet you. Are you here already?

so interested to know why have you now decided to make the move to wa ?

we have family there and would have loved to go but as you say with the house prices etc this is why or partly why that we are settled upon moving to adelaide. as you say with the kids being settled now this must have been no easy decision and im sure also expensive to move your stuff etc

We have never really settled here but just kept putting it down to moving somewhere new. In retrospect I should have known better as have lived abroad for long periods before and never felt like this. It just hit crunch time for us we really couldn't stand it anymore. SA in my opinion is becoming a bit like the UK with a good climate, crisis within its health department, just recently 100 doctors handed their notice in from all the major hospitals. Although they eventually backed down when they got their pay rise, many doctors did leave to work interstate. Teachers are in crisis and recently went out on strike. There is apparently huge shortage of teachers. I could go on for ever but I am sure you get the gist of things. We just are unhappy with the way things are run here.

The children are of course our main concern and I am dealing with a very fractious 13 (almost 14 year old) son who does not want to move. Luckily my other two are 4 and 7 so just look at it as a big adventure. We are just trying to tell him that long term we are thinking about his future. For example at one point he wanted to be a vet and SA does not have the courses here, so you have to travel interstate to train. We just decided that although they are in great schools we couldn't carry on being as unhappy as we are. We are moving down to Mount Barker, WA. We are selling our house and going back into rented but on acreage. The schools there are highly recommended and of course WA is the wealthy state pumping more money into health and schools. It doesn't have the problems associated with SA.

We are lucky that my husbands work have transferred him to a position in WA and are paying for most of our move. We have shopped around and to get a household of stuff down there is costing us $4600 by truck, we are driving with our animals which will cost us personally about $600/700 fuel and $1900 for a specialised removal trailer for stuff we will need for the drive.

Hi Kate, think this is the second post I've read from you that mentions a shortage of teachers! Where have you heard that from then? Nearly all the unemployed teachers who read this forum would disagree with you on that one I'm sure. If there are shortages perhaps they're out in the wilds somewhere? I think the S.A. teachers have a bloomin' cheek striking to be honest. We are considering moving interstate too, once we have PR sorted out and can move elsewhere, as there are no teaching posts (in primary schools anyway) that would be open to me in metropolitan Adelaide, so feel we might as well go to another state to try our luck, but it's the same with us as with you; my oldest son is the same age as yours and doesn't want to move away from all the friends he's made here and I would still feel so guilty about uprooting everyone yet again. It's a really horrible situation to be placed in isn't it?

oh and SAs vet school opens next year with all new facilities so our want - to be vets no longer have to go interstate, but suppose all the interstaters will want to come here and take all the places like in medicine:D Good luck with your move, Your son will settle I'm sure and if you are both happy then your whole life will improve and you will hopefully feel more sttled in Aus.

Sorry probably a bit confusing how I phrased it. There is a shortage of teachers in schools but the government won't fork out the money for new teachers. That is why they are striking at the moment. As far as I gather it is for extra pay and more financial resources for new teachers to be employed. So I can well imagine that there are many teachers wondering what they will do for employment. Terribly sad really if you have moved half way across the world.

It is very much like the doctor issue, interstate doctors won't come to SA to work longer hours for less pay. There is nothing to attract new doctors to SA. They are leaving and not getting replaced. I waited 4/5 months to see my immunoligist privately, the only guy specialising in my health problems and he is now leaving the hospital. SA has some of the top specialists in the world and is losing them insterstate for shorter hours and more pay. I was admitted to Flinders A & E recently and spent 3 hours on a stretcher in a corridor with about 30 other people. Luckily I was classed as a priority I dread to think how long the other people waited. Whilst I know the situation in the UK isn't any better, we moved for a better quality of life for our children.

We have stayed in SA for 3 1/2 years and feel it is time to move on. The kids will have more oppurtunities in WA. I knew they were thinking about bringing in a course to train as a vet, but we were told it would be years off. It will be great for all those teenagers having to travel interstate at the moment. It goes to show how poorly funded the universities are here if they have not been offering that course and it will take another year to implement. I mean no training course for vets in the whole of SA. I have had a lot of emails lately from people moving from SA to WA.
