Got tickets for Culture Club. We're also thinking about going to the Totally 80s show in July. Would also recommend local covers band New Romantics. They do all 80s stuff with a mixture of Aussie, UK, American etc bands. Seen them several times.

I noticed that Go West, Nik Kershaw and Cutting Crew will be over in Australia in October 2017 as part of this cruise. So I reckon us 80's fans could get to see the lineup again at The Gov next year if they combine doing shows around Australia while they are over here for the cruise, let's hope so because they were fantastic last time.

OMG...haven't added to this for a little while and there are so many bands coming to Adelaide.

Let's get some of them listed.

Rodriguez | The Return of Sugar Man!

RODRIGUEZ

With very special guest ARCHIE ROACH (all shows exc. Perth)

Frontier Touring are delighted to welcome legendary singer-songwriter Rodriguez back to Australia for an extensive run of performances with his band this November and December. Rodriguez will be joined at all shows (exc. Perth) by fellow music luminary, Australia's own Archie Roach.

"His voice remains untouched by the years, combining strength and frailty." - The Guardian

"The Rodriguez voice is all there... The legend is intact." - Time Out

The legendary self-taught guitarist's love affair with Australia is no secret; Rodriguez first toured our shores in the late 1970s, long before the rest of the world caught onto his talent thanks to Malik Bendjelloul's Oscar-winning film Searching for Sugar Man.

We went to see DAAS the other night at Her Majesty's theatre. Blooming love DAAS. Was so good to see them again.

Will check out what is coming in the next few months and see if there is anything that appeals. One show I wanted to book for was sold out so missed out there.

THE TROGGS

22 Nov

“Wild thing, you make my heart sing!”… 60’s British Rock Legends THE TROGGS finally return to Australia this November to celebrate the Wild Thing’s 50th Anniversary by performing all their Greatest Hits - Wild Thing, With a Girl Like You, I Can’t Control Myself, Love is All Around plus More!

THE TROGGS are widely known to have inspired the age

of garage and punk rock including The Ramones, Iggy Pop and The Buzzcocks.

THE TROGGS first entered the Australian charts in 1966

with “Wild Thing” going all the way to #1 knocking Frank Sinatra off the top spot! Their follow-up single “With A Girl Like You” was also a top 10 smash going to #8. Their Aussie chart success continued with their third single “I Cant Control Myself” (later covered by our own James Baker) reaching #13 and solidifying their place as one of the most successful British bands to come from the wave of 60’s bands. They hit the charts again with “Love is all Around” which was covered by Wet Wet Wet in 1994 and spent 6 weeks at #1 in Australia (15! Weeks at #1 in the UK)… Reg Presley famously spent some of his songwriting royalties on crop circle research. THE TROGGS toured the world to sell-out audiences and were everyone’s favourite Brit-rock band.

Fans around the world are treated to the sheer energy and determination the band still possesses in order to win over any crowd.

Their songbook of hits is simply meant to be enjoyed in this environment. The Troggs legend status will be confirmed when the room begins to shake and bodies start moving to all the hits you know and love from the last 50 years.

Expect to taken back to your teenage years in what could be your last chance to see one of the world’s most legendary rock bands live.

And we guarantee you, everything will most certainly be groovy…. Come and get wild with The Troggs!

I will definitely be going to The Gov to see some of these bands.

We went to see Paul Weller a couple of times but people were leaving early at the last concert due to his refusal to play more Jam tracks....

LEVELLERS

11 Oct

PERFORMING Levelling The Land LIVE.

Levellers have been called a lot conflicting of things over their 27-year history. However, the closest thing to a consensus surrounding the seminal British folk-punk band is that their platinum-selling 1991 album Levelling The Land is an absolute classic. During the summer of 1991 Levelling The Land redefined the UK’s musical landscape. Counter-culture became culture, the disenfranchised found a voice, and not a single pub, club, campfire or festival anywhere in Europe failed to reverberate with the refrains of this iconic album.Levellers provided the soundtrack for a society fed up with the twin evils of Thatcherite politics, and the post-80’s, pre-grunge musical wasteland.

Then as now, Levellers may have been hated, but they were also adored. More importantly, this album caused a reaction in everyone who heard it. Musically and lyrically it absolutely forbade ambivalence. It is exactly this quality which explains that why, 2 decades later, when all but the era’s very best music has faded from memory, each and every track has stood the test of time.

BAD MANNERS

04 Nov

THIS IS SKA! And damned great fun too!

Formed in 1976 in North London, BAD MANNERS spent the first half of the 80’s in the UK charts with a dozen hits including timeless classics including ‘Lip Up Fatty’, ‘My Girl Lollipop’ and ‘Special Brew’. Since then, the man once dubbed the anti-christ of etiquette, BUSTER BLOODVESSEL has barely left the stage, playing Ska anthems to audiences everywhere with his boisterous band of misfits egging fans on to ever increasing levels of joyous pleasure. Sillier than The Specials and madder than Madness - BAD MANNERS have always been notorious for their on-stage party atmosphere and their devilishly memorable frontman Buster's large girth, bald head and outlandishly long tongue. BAD MANNERS are a non-stop party band and promis to excite with a set-list chock-full of their BIGGEST HITS.

Adelaide Rolls Out Game-Changing Live Music Initiative

More Sharing Services

Adelaide’s already-thriving live music scene is set to undergo a massive overhaul with an innovative and internationally significant program unveiled to streamline regulations and get more venues hosting artists.

The 90 Day Project, commissioned by Premiere Jay Weatherill, will see a number of bureaucratic barriers broken down and rewritten following a live music census last month that shows just how valuable the state’s entertainment industry is.

The collaborative initiative between the SA government, City of Adelaide, Live Music Office, Australian Hotels Association of South Australia, music industry and surrounding community will recommend reforms that will allow venues a clear and easy path to apply for the needed licenses to host acts.

"This is the big one - completely rewrites the rulebook on live music and performance regulation in Australia,” Live Music Office policy director John Wardle said.

“It may take well into the next decade for the rest of the country to catch up".

The move will push to exclude ‘low risk’ entertainment from being treated as development, making it easier for licensed and unlicensed venues and non-traditional venues to host music without jumping through endless hoops, which will also bring the cost and time of applying down.

This is in addition to a proposed case management service that will give applicants a single point of contact who can guide them through.

There’ll also be a push to remove out-dated city council regulations that hinder certain venues from hosting live music and genres, while grants are being proposed to help venue operators with the costs of acoustic engineering reports; an element of applying that would also be made easier through an industry-standard technical guide for acoustic engineers.

Although the festival state has broken its previous records with the 2016 Fringe, Adelaide Festival and WOMAdelaide, Weatherill said a vibrant city needs a strong live music scene.

“These changes significantly cut red tape, making it cheaper and easier for venues to host live music,” he said.

The progressive move will see the state reach above and beyond the reach of the country.

The iconic US outfit will kick off the stadium tour in Brisbane, before moving on to play in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

RETURNING TO AUSTRALIA & TOURING

WITH MONTELL JORDAN AS SPECIAL GUEST IN ADELAIDE & AUCKLAND

Tuesday 22 Novemebr 2016, Thebarton Theatre

TICKETS ON SALE Monday 29 August 10am

Frontier Touring and Illusive are thrilled to be bringing one of history’s most influential female hip-hop and R&B acts, TLC to Australia and New Zealand this November. Joining TLC in Adelaide and Auckland will be fellow ‘90s R&B sensation Montell Jordan.Formed in Atlanta in 1991, TLC are a five-time Grammy Award winning act who captured the world’s attention with their sassy and sophisticated R&B set against a socially conscious lyrical style. These three empowered women, Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas and Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes would go on to sell over 65 million records worldwide.Tragically in 2002, Lopes was killed in a car accident while spending time in Honduras. Refusing to call it quits in honour of their fallen sister, T-Boz and Chilli have since continued to tour worldwide. In 1994 TLC released CrazySexyCool. Selling over 11 million copies in America alone, the record was nominated for six Grammys, and winning Best R&B Album. The truly iconic nature of CrazySexyCool remains true, following an entry in Rolling Stone magazine’s 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time. Featuring iconic jams like ‘Waterfalls’, ‘If I Was Your Girlfriend’ (penned by the late icon Prince) and ‘Creep’, it’s no surprise the album has become an R&B classic.‘CrazySexyCool is a sensual, coming-of-age sophomore album, and it remains a remarkably timeless link to what being a guileless, horny twentysomething is like in any era.’ – Consequence of SoundTheir third record FanMail received eight Grammy Award nominations, taking home the coveted Album of the Year and Best R&B Album while its singles ‘No Scrubs’ won Record of the Year and ‘Unpretty’ won Best Video. In Australia, the album is certified platinum, while in America it’s achieved a diamond certification for selling more than 10 million copies. Earlier this year, TLC announced a new album for 2016, their first in over a decade. Very little is known about the album, with the only public statement from the ladies reading:“This album, our final album, is dedicated to all of you that have stuck with us, always challenging us to do our best. And of course, it's for the new fans too! We just want to put out great music that touches everyone. That's it."Hitmaker Montell Jordan has been dropping hip hop and soul jams since bursting onto the scene with chart-topping single ‘This Is How We Do It’, which became one of the best-selling records of 1995. His debut album of the same name debuted at #1 in America, launching Montell Jordan into international stardom. To celebrate his breakthrough single’s 20-year anniversary last year, Jordan took to the stage to perform ‘This Is How We Do It’ during halftime at a Golden State Warriors NBA game in Oakland, USA, proving once again that he’s still the ultimate entertainer.TLC were joined at their debut Australian shows by a full band and stunning backdrop images paying homage to Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes with reviewers and fans alike touched by the nostalgic nature of the shows and reminded of TLC’s truly iconic musical archives.Their return to Australia and first ever New Zealand shows later this year are set to be just as spectacular. Don’t miss one of the most iconic R&B groups of our generation taking to the stage for a series of not-to-be-missed concerts this November.

The evolution of OPETH as a band is wondrous, witnessing spine-tingling music which bestrides genres, and an exponential growth in an ever diversifying fan base. OPETH performances are without peer - their live show is a deeply emotional, yet exhilarating experience. From centre stage they create an atmospheric utopia; theirs is truly a unique concert experience, and one not to be missed. If OPETH live deliver at an ever increasing peak, their artistic prowess in the studio is reaching dizzying heights, as will be seen in the sheer majesty of their upcoming album ‘Sorceress’. After their highly successful tour of Australia in 2015, and timed to complement their now sold out ‘Evening of Sorcery, Damnation & Deliverance’ concert at the Sydney Opera House, OPETH are pleased to announce Australian and New Zealand shows for February 2017 as part of the ‘’Sorceress World Tour’’.

Russell Howard:

Round The World - Live Tour

Thursday 13 July 2017 Doors 6:30pm, Show 7:30pm, Thebarton Theatre

After completely selling out his Wonderbox tour here in 2014, Russell is coming back with a brand new live show, Round the World, and this time bringing it to Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Sydney.

The new dates will see Russell play London and a further 29 international cities including: New York, Wellington, Gothenburg, Amsterdam, Oslo, Washington DC, Chicago, Dublin, Helsinki, Vancouver, Reykjavik and San Francisco.

Wonderbox, Russell’s previous sell-out international tour in 2014, saw him entertain 285,000 fans at 40 shows across the UK and Ireland (in London alone he played four shows at the Royal Albert Hall, two shows at the O2 Arena and one show at Wembley Arena), as well as sold-out runs in the USA, Australia and New Zealand.

“Howard has become one of the most successful stand-ups of his eneration.” The Telegraph UK

“Howard’s success is down to the way his comic outlook strikes a chord… He’s not afraid to be silly and gently whimsical but he never disappears up his own arse. And his attitude is always sunnily optimistic,

taking delight in the daft little details of his life.” The Guardian UK

The geyser of infectious energy, unyielding enthusiasm, stream-of-consciousness rants, eccentric observations and pop-culture satire never fails to leave crowds in stitches.

Hello Gov Lovers,

Well things are rolling along nicely as we get close to the end of 2016. And, while some things seem to be wrapping up, here at The Gov we've got plenty still up our sleeve. So if you need entertaining, it's the place to be.

This week, indie rock faves British India take the stage on Friday night, and they will make you love them that is a guarantee!

Saturday, it's time to do Christmas Greek-style with OPA! Live. There won't be any smashed plates, but there will be one Big Fat party!

Then, Sunday evening The Satellites & The Rhythm Aces combine forces to bring all the rockabilly cool, swingin' good times - be prepared to jump 'n' jive!

Everything is business as usual in the Front Bar this week. We will have some altered opening hours through the holiday season, which will be in next week's newsletter - so watch your email for the details.

See you soon!

BRITISH INDIA - ADELAIDE

16 Dec

‘Is there anything harder than watching something beautiful die? The human instinct is to hold on but, all too often, we realise that there is nothing left to do but let go.’

British India's new single ‘I Thought We Knew Each Other’, takes that moment and holds it up to the light.

Layered in a film of shimmering strings and guitars, and with an unrelenting break-beat to match, the hushed intensity of the song’s verses make way for the dizzying rush of a mile high chorus. Indeed, ‘I Thought We Knew Each Other’ sees the band’s effortless intensity honed razor sharp.

In support of the new single, and following last year’s hugely successful album tour – which included multiple sold-out shows in Melbourne and Sydney – and rave reviews for performances at this year’s Groovin The Moo, British India will return to the road for an epic 20-date jaunt. As part of the tour, the band will take their high-octane live show to twelve regional centers along with six capital cities.

Now with a whopping four Top 10 ARIA albums under their belt, seven entries into the coveted ‘Hottest 100’ countdown, and over 10 years in the biz, there is no stopping this indie-rock juggernaut.

Pinch and a punch for the first day of an awesome month! There's so much good stuff happening in February as we anticipate the beginning of the Adelaide Fringe Festival, alongside plenty of other excellent touring acts that will grace our stage.

We're jumping right into the fun with Lachy Doley, the Hendrix of the Hammond Organ, hitting the stage on Friday 3 February.

Saturday night, 4 February, local fave Ronnie Taheny brings her gorgeous sounds, spunky attitude and engaging storytelling to The Gov. She will play two sets and have you captivated the whole night through. Catch her before she jets off on her next adventure!

Sunday brings the infectious energy of Hot Potato Band. They've got all the horns and aren't afraid to use them to make you dance! Supported by Conchillia and Local Revolution, this will have the room jumping to delicious beats!

Don't miss the fun. We'll see you here soon!

THE LACHY DOLEY GROUP

03 Feb

Lovelight is the fourth studio album for Lachy Doley who’s dubbed the Jimi Hendrix of the Hammond Organ.

Lachy is a player who can pump, pamper and occasionally pound the most intense, ferocious and sometimes transcendent sounds from his ’57 Hammond C3 and 70’s Whammy Clavinet. Add his powerful blues vocals screaming straight from his heart and you've a mesmerising, unforgettable show not to be missed.

At 1.6 MILLION views, Lachy’s version of Use Me is just one of his viral videos setting the world on fire. Lachy has been headhunted to play and record with the world’s best including Glenn Hughes, Chad Smith, Joe Bonamassa, Jimmy Barnes, Powderfinger and so many more.

This time Lachy has got some of these friends including Jimmy Barnes and Nathan Cavaleri to feature on his new album Lovelight With his last album Conviction taking Doley onto the world stage reaching #5 on the UK Blues Broadcasters Charts, #1 on the Australian iTunes Blues Charts and #1 on the Australian Blues & Roots Airplay Charts.

The Lachy Doley Group have played over 200 shows and festivals around Australia since the first release in 2011 including Queenscliff Music Festival, Mojo Burning Festival, Rock In The Vines Festival, PEAK Perisher Festival, Echuca Blues, Noosa Jazz, Mitchell Creek Rock&Blues and were the stand out hit at the Gold Coast’s Blues On Broadbeach Festival for the last 3 years running.

RONNIE TAHENY

04 Feb

After working with the likes of David Gray, Luka Bloom, Billy Bragg, Ani diFranco, Aimee Mann and Fairport Convention, Australian singer songwriter, Ronnie Taheny, continues dodging bullets in Jerusalem, being smuggled into Bosnia, jumping from burning buildings in Antwerp and breaking into the Athens Olympic stadium to do a lap of honour. These antics are still just another day at the office for our beloved larrikin who continues to live the life of a renegade while taking her music to the world stage over the last 25 years.

On SAT FEB 4th 2017, Ronnie will storm the stage with aplomb and hold us accountable and in awe for the next 3 hours. Slowly unveiling the talents of her favourite colleagues; Jarrad Payne (drums/vocals), Flik Freeman (bass/vocals) and Mark Ferguson (keys/vocals), it’s Ronnie’s only Adelaide-based concert before we farewell her back to Europe.

The focus is on tracks from her 8th and latest studio CD “START!” arranged for 4-part harmonies from a capella to a full-frontal band.

Check out the cheeky, charismatic, roguish charm, boundless energy, amusing anecdotes, acerbic poems and spontaneous one-liners all told in Taheny’s inimitably dry and self-deprecating style. But don’t take our word for it, be there.

Ronnie Taheny Solo: 8:20 - 9:05pm

HOT POTATO BAND

05 Feb

Anything could happen! Known to cause a severe case of happy fever, this 11 piece brass band is sure to put a smile on your face with an incredibly unique live show.

Launching their new, eagerly awaited album 'Paint The Town', and returning from their acclaimed performances at Woodford Folk Festival, Hot Potato Band have become one of the most celebrated performing bands in Australia both on and off the stage. From large scale festivals to intimate venues they have successfully captured the energy and interaction of their street performances and perfectly integrated it into their on stage show. Beware, as they make you the centre of their performance… literally!

The band's unique sound comes from the absence of a single drum kit, bass guitar and electrified instruments. Three drummers create synchronised grooves on a deconstructed drum kit. The bass lines are covered by an enormous, lung busting Sousaphone. Two baritone saxophones mimic the part of a rhythm guitar and the bands huge array of horns cover catchy chorus lines and provide a beautiful harmonic cloud for Dylan (the vocalist) to float above.

Just a reminder that among all the fringe and festival stuff some great theatre is always around. Local theatre groups in smaller venues like the Goodwood Theatre. We went to see the Stirling players last night at the Stirling community theatre. Can't say it was lighthearted but a very strong performance by all four actors. Thought provoking. A story worth telling and very well told called Forget me Not. And yes I did shed a few tears.

Pity more people were not there to experience it.

As well as all the Fringe / festival activities happening in Adelaide at the moment there are also plenty of bands visiting.

Amazing just how many of the older groups have reformed and are touring:

This one was so popular that they have added an extra night at the Gov! Anyone remember them...shows my age!

So sorry fr the delay in keeping this current!

Despite a wet afternoon (thankfully warm) the Leconfield concert with the B52's and Simple Minds was great.

I am attending another Leconfield event on the 9th which is Cyndi Lauper and Blondie and I also have tickets to the Greenday concert at the Entertainment centre (these are selling out and they have added extra shows in the other states).

I love the fact that many old bands are touring again...I have tickets for the Undertones at the Gov....

Here's a few of the events that are happening soon...

Hello Gov Lovers,

It's been a huge week for The Gov as on Monday we were announced as the inaugural APRA AMCOSS Licensee of the Year . It's a big deal. We're over the moon and and honoured to be acknowledged on the national stage for our contributions to live music.

Importantly, it recognises us for good music citizenship, meaning that we respect musicians and their rights, work closely with agents, promoters, techs, licensing authorities and more, and do the right thing by everyone.

Receiving this award, the first of its kind, is super special. Thanks to you all for your support.

We've got a great weekend of live music lined up for you all!

On Saturday, 1 April, ELECTRIC MARY will turn the amp up to 11 with a classic rock sound that you won't want to miss. They create a wall of sound that will blow you away. Don't miss the chance to rock out with them!

Then, on Sunday, THE WAIFS celebrate their 25th Anniversary with us and will play a bunch of fantastic songs from their new album 'Ironbark' alongside those tunes we all love to sing along to. They always weave a couple of great stories into a show and will also be telling some of yours. Check out how to share below.

We hope to see you in the crowd.

GET YOUR TEENAGE KICKS WITH THE UNDERTONES

“Standing here watching this perfect jukebox band you are reminded by just how many great songs The Undertones have, every riff, every vocal line, every moment drips in pop perfection and the thrill of two entwining guitars that cram so much melody and adrenaline into the music that their music sounds eternally joyous, is part of the heart of soul of their greatness.” – Louder Than War

The Undertones, the legendary first wave Irish punks who earned seven top 40 UK singles and three top 20 UK albums between 1978 and 1981 and whose debut 7” Teenage Kicks was influential English DJ John Peel’s favourite single of ALL time will make their Australian debut this July.

Don't miss the chance to catch a piece of music history, live on stage at The Gov on Sunday 9 July!

1_1.jpg THE UNDERTONES
09 Jul
Formed whilst teenagers in Derry, Ireland in 1975 and taking shape mid-76 following a diet of the Ramones, Nuggets-style garage bands and the emerging UK punk scene, The Undertones – much like the Buzzcocks – churned out two minute punk / pop classics about girls, petty jealousies, spotty neuroses and chocolate including Teenage Kicks, My Perfect Cousin, Get Over You. You’ve Got My Number, Here Comes The Summer, Jimmy Jimmy and loads more over four brilliant albums before disbanding in 1983.
On their 35th anniversary tour The Undertones delivered precisely what was expected of them – urgent, no messing about, two-and-a-half-minute stabs of jumpy punk pop.

OMG there are so many concerts coming up. I have tickets to a lot of them.

Here's a selection:

I don't think that I will be attending this as it's an Adelaide 500 (seems strange not to call it the Clipsal 500!) event:

RobbieWilliams

Robbie Williams set to headline at Adelaide 500!

Kicking off the Adelaide 500 20th Anniversary celebration with a huge announcement, ROBBIE WILLIAMS will perform the headline Sunday night after race concert, in what is likely to be the event's biggest concert ever, and is his only Adelaide performance.

As a solo artist, Williams has sold over 70 million albums, and has six of the top 100 best-selling albums in British history. He has had 14 number one singles including Angels, Let Me Entertain You, Millennium, No Regrets, Rock DJ, Supreme, Eternity, Feel and most recently, 2012's Candy. Don't miss this headline grabbing superstar, at the 2018 Adelaide 500 on Sunday March 4.

Tickets are on sale 9am, Monday 7 August 2017.

I went to one of the concerts at Leconfield and The Angels were one of the support bands...enjoyed their music and they are coming to Thebarton soon:

On Friday 4 August we're looking forward to the luscious sounds of Vera Blue in a sold out show.

And, on Saturday 5 August we're getting x-cited about the X 40th anniversary show when we'll dig into the band's punk energy that has kept going strong.

Next Wednesday 9 August, New Found Glory bring us a night of pop-punk and a journey through their fave albums Sticks and Stones & Catalyst in full. They're being joined by special guests Stand Atlantic in what will be a huge night!

About the event

After a triumphant return in 2016, international superstars Culture Club will be touring Australia later this year. Culture Club is led by front man, Boy George, currently endearing himself to new Australian audiences as their favourite coach on The Voice and taking Culture Club to a large legion of new fans.

In 2016, the group sold out some of the world’s most iconic venues including LA's Hollywood Bowl and London’s famous Wembley Arena. Musically, they are sounding better than ever as Boy George and the rest of the original line-up including Roy Hay, Jon Moss, and Mikey Craig are now joined by an incredible group of musicians, including extra percussionists, keyboard players, backing singers and a horn section. This bigger line-up now stands as an incredible musical revue that adds a whole new element of warmth and sound to their live shows.

It's getting to be quite expensive going out to see all the bands that are coming to Adelaide!

Here's one that I haven't seen and tickets will be released soon...

SQUEEZE....so many, memories from my younger days...will be getting tickets to see them!!

Talk about Busy! There’s been no time to rest here at MJR HQ, we’ve already got a stack of Brit bands on tour in the coming months so we’d thought we’d add one more! We’re absolutely thrilled to announce SQUEEZE with very special guest DR JOHN COOPER CLARKE!

Their first trip downunder since re-forming a decade ago, Squeeze have never been more vibrant, relevant and on point as they couple their pop sensibilities with poignant lyrics and a live show that’s not to be missed. With hits like ‘Cool For Cats’, ‘Tempted’ and ‘Up The Junction’, Squeeze will bring the soundtrack of the 70s and 80s into full focus with special guest punk poet Dr John Cooper Clarke.
