A FIRE at a southern suburbs primary school that caused about $500,000 damage overnight may have been deliberately lit.

The Metropolitan Fire Service was called to Hallett Cove South Primary School after reports it was ablaze about 11.30pm on Monday.

Eight firetrucks and 30 firefighters attended the fire, which was well alight at the northern end of the school.

The fire struck an atrium, offices, the canteen and a storage area, an MFS spokeswoman said.

But firefighters were able to prevent the blaze from spreading to the adjoining hall, taking about 45 minutes to control it.

The spokeswoman said the fire caused about $500,000 damage and was being treated as suspicious with police investigating.

No one was injured in the blaze.

COUPLE WOKEN UP BY FIRE CALLED TRIPLE ZERO

Lyn Fabray, who lives across the road from Hallett Cove South Primary School, said she and her husband Peter were woken uP by the fire took overnight.

“We’d been in bed for about an hour and I heard this crack,” she said.

“I sat up and I could see this yellow glow coming from the school. The building over there was all lit up yellow so we knew there was a fire over there.”

She said she rang Triple-Zero immediately and within 20 minutes firefighters, police and even the dog squad had arrived.

“It was very, very hectic here until about 3am when they all left,” she said.

“Our bedroom was lit up like a Christmas tree because of all the lights. We have never seen anything like that and we’ve been here for 42 years.

Ms Fabray said the worked for police for 24 years and knew schools get targeted in school holidays.

She said the emergency services did a good job keeping the fire under control and not once did she feel like her home was under threat.

“It was interesting to see how they all do their job and work together,” she said.

“It was different for little Livonia St to have something like that happen.”

The Hallett Cove South Primary School has about 160 students enrolled and is celebrating its 40th birthday in October.

People always think it's a funny thing to joke about in a 'yay, no school' kind of way but school fires really are the pits - children's and teachers work gone, the real hassle of having to find alternative accommodation, the upheaval and general disruption, not to mention the fact that it's public money that pays to rebuild...

This is shocking.

Mindless individuals with nothing better to do. They say that it will be business as usual when the kids go back next week but it will be a real disruption until things are rebuilt. Surprising that it has happened here as Hallett Cove is not known for these sort of things.
