I am travelling on a tourist visa can I open a bank account so that I have funds for my stay

Hi Pamela,

You certainly can. I have friends who visit every few years and my own parents come out here as tourists and they all have bank accounts. I don't know whether there's a time frame that you have to do it in but best to get it done asap. They all have accounts at the AnZ.

That is very true, thank you.

Another point to take into consideration is that there are many banks offering accounts with zero monthly fees...no point in paying $5 per month for the "privilege" of having an account when another bank may offer the same deal but without the $60 per year charge that goes along with it!

Just to add I set up a migrant Westpac Choice bank account from the UK bout 2 years ago. Monthly fee of $5 a month was waived for 12 months which you don't pay anyway in Australia if salary over $2000 month.I couldn't get to Australia in that time frame so my main point is I emailed the guy who set up the Westpac account and explained my situation. He permanently waived the $5 monthly fee until I actually got to OZ.
