Older Teenagers/Young Adults Get-Together

This is aimed at every older teenager / young adult on this forum. My family and I will be arriving on the Wednesday 10th February 2010. We are a young couple with a daughter Shannon aged 17, son Nathan aged 21 and another daughter Charlotte aged 11. I am extremely worried about my kids being isolated and not gaining good friends in Adelaide. I am not so worried about my Nathan has he is a professional sportsman and has very outgoing nature, but its my Shannon she is more resiliant about our family adventure with our new life in Adelaide. Basically does not want to be in Adelaide.

So what I am hoping to arrange once we have settled is to arrange a a BBQ at our place for all you teenagers / young adults to socialise. Hopefully this will not just help my kids but other young people to meet new friends. Maybe some like minded parents can tag along as well lol.

Obviously we will not be in Adelaide until Feb, but I will post an update nearer the time. Furthermore I have coached and managed soccer teams for the past 22 years here in the UK, plus my son has been a professional. I am going to look into sorting out a team from scratch and enter a Saturday/Sunday league. Maybe we could call the team PIA FC. What do you think moderators. We could arrange Parents V Kids Soccer match.

I understand that you young ones - that it is horrible for us older people/parents trying to get you friends etc, but this BBQ is meant with all good intentions. Hopefully some good can come from this socialable event and you had the chance to gain acquaintances and exchange contact details and sorted out your own future arrangements regarding meeting each other.

I look forward to your replies...................

Hi Tony

I can try and drag my 16 year old along, but she is too busy enjoying herslf.

When we arrived (15 motnhs ago).... she did not want to be here, but she loves it now.

Regarding setting up a club.... really difficuly here to do it from scratch. (major financial investment). Much better to get involved with an exisitng club. I coach with a club, school league and academy here. if you want more details on how things operate... PM me. :)

Cheers

Si

Can you let me know when you sort this out as it sounds great. My eldest daughter has gone back to the UK (long and horrible story !) but my my son 14 and daughter 4 are still shackled to us so a get together would be excellent especially for him.

Thanks Maria and Adam. Keep in touch and by time you get to Adelaide we should be able to help your family settle and hopefully help you in any way. Least kids are the same age.

Hi there - my husband (Gary) and myself have been in Adelaide for just over 2 years, we're now living at Seaford and loving being by the sea. At long last we've convinced our 19 yr old daughter to join us and she arrives on the 16th January:). Her big concern (obviously) is meeting young people of a similar age (can't think why she wouldn't just enjoy the company of 40+ yr olds!!) and I saw your posting and thought it would be a great way for her to meet some young people and also for us to meet up with new people as well. When you get sorted with a date let us know we'd love to join in yr BBQ as well as welcoming you to Adelaide.

Cheers

Lynne

Hi Rachegarlo

Well my attitude is if you cannot beat them you just join them. I would just like my kids to meet up with some nice potential friends who have shared the same experiences. At times I do feel for my kids that this process to emigrate to Adelaide is all for me. Young adults and older teenagers tend to get the rough end of the stick when it comes down to certain situations and if I can try to make things a little easier for them to accept life in another country, new challenges to tackle, to help them gain great friendships and pals for life, then thats the way forward. So in my opinion - is to throw a party! This invitation is not just to help my kids settle but to help others in a similar opinion meet other people in the same position.

I did this for my kids as each of them started school. When each of them went to their school visits before beginning school I invited other likelies to meet up over the summer so that when they started school in January they already knew some of the kids. This was also because the kindy they went to did not feed this particular primary school.

I think you are a really caring excellent Dad and I'm sure you will settle here and your kids hopefully too with all the support you give them.
