Hey,

I am a massive bookworm and am looking for any recommendations ref Australian Authors - fiction and historical. Authors I like are Clive Cussler/Philippa Gregory, Jack Higgins and similar.

I'd also like to read more on Australian history and the Aborigines but it is very hard getting hold of anything.

Are there any books clubs or anything anyone knows of in Adelaide?

Thanks Vicki :-)

Thanks for this thread I too was looking for some books to read. I just read a book called Cold Beer and Crocodiles which is about an American born but now resident of Australia who cycled around the perimitre and through the outback. It was really really good.

Anyone know of any more travel type books?

What about classic Australian cinema for a bit of Aussie culture? Films that I can think of are :

Crocodile Dundee

Muriel's Wedding

Strictly Ballroom

Mad Max

The Sundowners (Hollywood's view of early Australian settlers with some very bad accents!)

Sunday Too Far Away (classic tale of sheep shearers, partly filmed near Quorn)

Priscilla Queen of the Desert (drag queens go to Alice Springs - love it! - amazing scenery)

Idiot Box (story of unemployed bogans in the Sydney suburbs)

Chopper (story of notorious criminal with Eric Bana - too violent for me)

Outback (obscure cult horror film)

Picnic at Hanging Rock (a bit weird but apparently true - have been to Hanging Rock and can see how easy it would be to get lost)

Gallipoli

Walkabout (classic Jenny Agutter)

Two Hands (early Heath Ledger)

The Dish (very funny)

The Castle (also very funny with Eric Bana)

Shine (filmed in Adelaide)

Rabbit Proof Fence (excellent story of Aborginal children)

Maslin Beach (yes a very corny film based on a day at the nudist beach!!)

Wog Boy (comedy with Italians/Greeks in Melbourne)

For Historical an Aussie Classic "FOR THE TERM OF HIS NATURAL LIFE'' by Marcus Clarke might be out of print but look out for it in secondhand book stores, well worth a read.
