Fly Fishing in SA?

Recommended Posts

hi all

We are finally on our way and coming over in September - hubby is a keen fly fisherman but we are not sure how popular this is as when we were in QLD a few years ago it didn't seem to be that popular. Just wondered if its worht packing up all his fly tying stuff and rods etc or whether to sell it before we go

He would also like me to say any good fishing locations or tips would be welcome but not sure if I want to lose him so soon after arrival!!!

Hi and welcome, Fly fishing in on the up here in SA, although mostly salt water, there are still fresh water dams to fish, saying that I brought all my fishing gear with me, but seldom use it and have sold some of it off, just a different style of fishing here.

I am no expert on Fly fishing but as Mike said it seems to be on the up but nowhere near as popular as in the UK.

Heard of a bloke even fly fishing with small pieces of polystyrene in a Carp pond here!!

Our local tackle shop does not seem to have anything in your field but have a look........... http://www.anglerschoicetackle.com.au/

Have a look in the local fishing forum as well.............http://www.strikehook.com

Despite working in trout fisheries since 1998 and teaching loads of people to fly fish I daftly gave all my gear to my pupils before I moved over, believing I'd never use it again. Doh! I hope they're enjoying using it. TBH I've never seen anyone fly fish over here but I do know some do, especially salt water and as Mike says some of the dams hold trout and redfin (perch). Gear is hard to get hold of here, better off buying it overseas on the internet, the locals don't seem to possess the finesse that fly fishing requires lol....

I do know that there is some great fly fishing within a couple of hours of where I live in the hills of Victoria, the Grampians etc, just got to share it with those damn Mexicans! And don't forget you will need a license over there.

Just remembered there is a trend for fly fishing for carp on the Murray too, there was a great article about it a while ago in Wildcoast. Surprisingly (from a Pom perspective) they were using big lures for them rather than imitations and catching them during the spawning season when they are at their most aggressive (bit like me;)
