Hi Everyone,

Your feedback would be appreciated.

As a migrant arriving in Adelaide in Jan 2013 , can we buy a car immediately with:

1. No Australian passport ( we will be on our British passports )

2. No Australian drivers licenece ( we have both British and and have got an International drivers licence )

3. No permanent residential address ( we will rent somewhere when we get over & proberbly stay in a motel for first 3 days )

We will be able to pay cash upfront for the full amount.

We need to go in and test drive, buy and leave in the same day.

Any advice, tips would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Shan

Yes, you can buy the car. You have 14 days to register it. That's where the problem starts. But it can be done. You will need to provide proof of address for this. An introduction letter from the bank worked for me. From this, or other accepted ID documents, a driver number can be created. Then your away! The link below will give you all the details.

I don't see why not but this is the land of a 1000 petty rules. Try e mailing one of the big dealers - Jarvis at Gepps Cross or Stillwell Ford (look on Google for numbers) and ask them.

Having just spent the past 5 days searching for a brand new car and Jarvis and Stillwells were the con artists champions, i ended up using the Hyundai dealer at nurioopta, absolute ripper of a deal.

hi what i can suggest is that as soon as you arrive you transfer your brit liscence to an australian one.. then get a bank account--or even before you leave uk you caqn get one--westpac , commbank does it i think.. it will not matter if you are not a resident yet--since you said you are buying cash.. but why use up your cash when you can get it on finance...some dealers can give you finance but it will be just base on you visa..peter kittle toyota is a good place to go...but it depends on you where your fancy is. hope this helps

The easiest thing to do is take 100 points of ID to Motor Registration ( Service SA) yes you will need some form of ID with an address. Bank account statement or similar will suffice. Apply for a client number so that you may register a vehicle here in your name in sa. No need to worry about your licence straight away. You can get a ID card from them as well if you so desire to help you with future ID.

This is all you need to go test drive, buy a car and register it here

Get a letter from you Aussie bank giving details of your temp address, they will do it for you there and then.

Once you have your proof of address, your UK passport and UK driving licence you can go and get a SA driving licence.

We managed with SA licence and UK passport, but if you need anything else you can use your medicare card.

Nip with your passport, SA driving licence and visa details to Medicare and they give you your number on a medicare slip.

Don't swap your licence. !!! Keep your uk. You can. You can say you require to go back to Britain, just incase you want to or need to go back. You can also apply for an ozzy one too....have two!

They don't take your UK licence, you do have both. You are best getting your Aussie one as you pay a higher excess on some car insurance until you've had your Aussie licence for 2 years.

New Residents/Students/Holders of non Australian Drivers Licences:

You will need to obtain a “Client number” from any branch of Service SA to register a vehicle in South Australia in your own name. This can be effected by appearing in person with “100 Points of Identification” Usually the same amount of Identification that you used to open a bank account, should be sufficient. You only need to do this once. Your client number will remain with you for life. Once you have a SA Drivers Licence, the number is your client number. You do not need to have a drivers licence to have a vehicle registered in your name. If you need more information please pm.
