Research is all good and I agree research is a big thing to do before you make such a big move. Everyone is different though and until you move you wont know how you're going to settle and no amount of research can prepare you for it. We never did a reccie, one reason was the cost but also just having had twins it wasnt very practical. I wasnt to bothered though as living here and coming for a reccie (or holiday as MY eyes would have seen it) are two different things. We are all different at the end of the day and what I find fun and exciting someone else may find very boring and vice versa. At the moment we are happy here and dont find it boring but whose to say in 10 years time when our kids are teenagers if we still feel the same.

Completely agree, I've said homesickness and to some extent work are two things we do not have complete control over. But research gets rid of people finding out some of the things that get posted for instance -
Adelaide is a bit backward.
Although its an English speaking country it's nothing like the UK.
I can't believe that marmite is so expensive.
Cars cost more.
It's quite hot in the summer.
It's dry here.
It's cold in the winter.
Schools really charge fees.
Where's burger king.
I have to pay for prescriptions.
Ect,ect,ect.
Some silly ones in there but things you should take the time to look into before you get here (especially if you like marmite and burger king)
Does not necessarily require a reccie just a bit of googling.

LOL at the It's cold in winter. We did lots of research into the weather as it was one big thing that made us decide on Adelaide. We knew it got cold in winter but when you living in it my god it is cold, a lot colder than we thought it would feel. A few more layers of clothes, hot water bottles and we happy. To be honest I think I could live in a bin bag and be happy as long as I got my kids and hubby with me (and get let out for the odd girly night out) but that just me :-)

OP: One man's pleasure is another man's poison. I wonder if anyone is ever allowed to change their mind or how they feel about something? However, it maybe unintentional, but the thread is going cause a heated exchange. I am not being critical, but what was the point of your thread? Are you after ideas about what to do or just wondered if anyone else finds it boring here. If so, will that help you?
Personally, I do think that Adelaide is a pretty quiet place and that is one of the reasons we came. I thought I'd hate Brisbane but spent three weeks there and loved it. Maybe it's similar to Manchester than Adelaide is, but many SA people say it's better to bring your kids up here.
I also think it's unfair for people to criticise other people for not coming on a reccie, if we had done that, we'd have hardly any money when we came. As others say, you can't really make a judgement until you've lived somewhere.
OP, although I am unsure of your reasons for the thread, I am sorry that some have tried to turn it into a slanging match. Take it easy, hope it all works out.
Take care,
Cooler

We never came on a recce, OH had never even been to Australia and neither of us knew anything about Adelaide apart from reading somewhere it had a "mediterranean climate", and we did about two weeks worth of research - if that! We sold everything in the UK - house, boat, cars, motorbikes - and bought a house within two weeks of being in the country (and two cars and a dog!) and we are still here now....
So, research isn't everything....

Maybe that's another point. The sort that emigrate may never be happy anywhere forever. Always getting itchy feet after so many years and looking for another adventure ?

its not that i got itchy feet and like moving, its the fact that adelaide doesnt tick all of my boxes anymore, and after doing research and speaking to a few south aussies they have told me qld is the place to be for me, and a majority of my south aussie mates have told me if they didnt have all there family here they would head up there in a heartbeat, im hoping to find home there but if i dont, well its not the end of the world, nothing ventured nothing gained

Perhaps a thread for reccie or no reccie debate might be worthwhile?

Ummm.,...am I reading you right? Your research into Brisbane is by talking to dissatisfied people in Adelaide? I really hope you have spoken to a few people who have gone to Brisbane too.... not just those who think the grass is greener up there?
