Hi

We came over on this visa originally and No, private medical insurance is not necessary, apply for your Medicare cards as soon as you get here and also get ambulance cover which will be about $130 per year for a family, as if you need to call out an ambulance you will have to pay $700 !!!

My daughter was taken very ill about 3 months after we arrived and we too her to hospital, we didnt know what to expect but they were fantastic we stayed in 2 nights (I stayed in a room with her) with private bathroom ect and all this was free as it is covered under reciprocal health care with the UK.

Hope this helps

Thanks

Kim
