when returning to the UK for a holiday, do you really need Travel Insurance for medical, especially teeth issues?? We'll be back for 2 weeks plus 2 in Europe, but the OH will be staying on for a while.

Do Aus and UK and the other countries in Europe have a reciprocal medical policy? For emergency medical care, ie trip to A&E or needing a prescription from a doctor for something that appears/happens during your stay? If so and you are not worried about anything else, ie needing flying back to Aus while medically incapacitated or emergency medical bills you can't afford to cover then don't bother.

 

However, I'd always take out travel insurance as tbh, for the sake of a few £££ or $$$ its peace of mind if you lose your wallet, need some kind of medical care that may require a bit of a stay somewhere etc. Especially if staying longer than a week or two. Peace of mind and all that blah

 

End of the day, its what you are prepared to do and if you want to pay a few $$$ for it or accept the consequences if you don't and something were to happen.

FWIW we always use STA Travel and they have been brilliant between Aus and the UK and whenever we've travelled anywhere else we've used them. Hubby used them coming over from Aus every time and as we haven't been able to fault them and they are reasonable cost wise, we've stuck with them.

We had basic travel insurance (we actually specifically used a credit card that offers this as one of the perks to pay for flights etc) which covered lost luggage, personal belongings, delays, etc - emergency repatriation too I think. But we didn't bother with medical stuff because as Snifter says, there is a reciprocal agreement between the two countries.

Could you not apply for an e111 card ,they give you basic free cover in europe.

I thought Stevo (that was hard to type, I like to use usernames as much as possible ) had renounced UK citizenship so won't be able to make use of that. Plus not actually resident in the UK (or EU).

Hmmm renouncing uk citizenship? I dont get that. I spent half of my life in oz and am gonna marry an aussie but id NEVER EVER EVER give up my uk citizenship. Each to their own I guess. They would never know ure not resident in the UK for the e111 i'd just put down a relies address. That doesnt cover you for the actual trip though and if things go wrong on the way. So as others I'd take it out purely for this element. After all it is a holiday in the way that a holiday to any other country would be...

It's too early a.m. - I read that as "PORN website"!

 

We had insurance cover for our trip, like Loopylisa said it was a holiday just like any other holiday. I would imagine you would be covered for medical emergencies but just in case.... And applying the principle of Sod's Law, you always seem to need it if you make a decision not to get it so taking out insurance was a bit like touching wood!

You should always take out travel insurance with medical cover, if only to cover you while you're flying. If you get sick in transit, or on the plane and the plane detours to the nearest airport in a country that doesn't have reciprocal health rights, or if someone else brings a nasty bug onto the plane, you all get quarantined together in transit and you end up catching it, that could be your life savings gone.
