Beach for kids

Is there any shallow beach without big waves, near Adelaide which is suitable for kids? Any idea?

Semaphore Beach is child friendly & stays shallow for quite a way out....lots of lovely beaches in SA tho

Moana is a really lovely beach, some days last summer it was so still it was like a pool! we also head down to the onkaparinga river, just by the footbridge over to southport beach, the river banks are sand and the kids splash and mess around in there (no deeper than my 10 yr olds waist most of the time we went just have to watch tide times as the current can sweep the kids off their feet!)

Christies, Port Noarlunga and Port Noarlunga South...stunning beaches.

Port Noarlunga / Port Noarlunga South took the cleanest beach in Oz award for 2010/ 11 as well.

Most of the Adelaide metropolitan beaches are pretty safe for kids. The more northern beaches don't get big waves for surfing so are generally safer, plus beaches like Grange and Henley Beach are very sandy with no stones underfoot. With the ones further south (like Moana), at times they can have quite a big wave so may be a bit rougher, you just have to weigh up the conditions on the day as the wind and surf varies all the time. Look to see how many people are out surfing ! With young kids try and keep away from surfers/kite surfers and boogie boarders in case they get hit. It is wise to always swim on a patrolled beach if possible, where there are lifeguards on hand to keep an eye on things. Most beaches are patrolled by the local surf club at weekends during the summer. If there are flags up (red and yellow), then always swim between the flags. Then you know that lifesavers will be looking out for anyone getting into difficulty, plus the flags will be on a safe part of the beach away from rips and rocks.

All the beaches from Seacliff upwards dont tend to get much in the way of waves.......seacliff is particularly shallow.

As said, more stunning beaches further south, but pick and choose conditions with small kids

I go semaphore all the time have gone to other beaches just to spice it up a bit...but not to scare you its going to be summer soon...SHARKS are known to get close to shores and before anyone says sharks don't get close to the shore...a shark can swim in a foot of water.

we're lucky enough to live in west lakes and on delphin island there are a couple of manmade 'beaches' - strip of sand beside the playpark and the kids can paddle and splash about in the lake - corcorran drive. could also recommend semaphore beach.

And waves No.1 Son was very disappointed when he went there with his bodyboard! Flat as a millpond!

Yep jtct I must agree Glenelg the water is shallow and warm goes out really far before becoming very deep and is among the most popular, virtually no agressive water sports. But its proberbly the main tourist beach destination so gets busy sometimes. Trams go directly there from the city, and has shopping and bars like continental resorts (well nearly! lol).

Yep jtct I must agree Glenelg the water is shallow and warm goes out really far before becoming very deep and is among the most popular, virtually no agressive water sports. But its proberbly the main tourist beach destination so gets busy sometimes. Trams go directly there from the city, and has shopping and bars like continental resorts (well nearly! lol).

 

I stayed in the water for about 5 hours when it went above 40 degrees! Feels cold when you first go in but, if its hot and the tide's out the sand warms up making it fantastic in the shallows. I swim in the sea from November - April or May!

Best time of day to go is after the kids come out of school during the week, or you come out of work - the water has warmed up beautifully after a day on the hot sands, and the sun isn't as strong then so no worry about constant top-ups of the sun block. I like Henley beach and Semaphore - and West Beach is lovely but has slightly more waves. If you head south at the weekend, look for Normanville for lovely sand and a great beachside cafe (ideal to sit sipping a glass of vino while the kids play on the sand!) or the most beautiful beach - but with strong waves - is Horseshoe Bay, which also has a very nice fish and chip shop! Take shade with you if you are going to any of the beaches during the day.
