fruit and meat markets in Adelaide

Much like Dalston market in Hackney, London, does Adelaide have anything similar to offer?

 

Meat market? fruit and veg market?? and FISH market I love my seafood!

how EXPENSIVE is it to shop there rather than in woolies or coles? I prefer my fresh foods.

 

Also, just like Indians have their Indian shops to get all the different types if curry powders etc.... are there any Filipino or chinese supermarkets in Adelaide?

Not expensive at all, especially if you go towards closing when the stalls bag up everything they need to go and charge a dollar. There is such a wide range at the central market and China town abuts onto it with lots of food places frequented by the Chinese. Most areas will have a fruit n veg shop and a butchers. often these shops work out to be cheaper than buying everything from the supermarket, but the supermarket produce on the whole isn't too bad either.

I loved Central market. My hubby used to live a few blocks from there and it was where we went shopping all the time, hardly ever used a supermarket even though there was a Coles not far away. We'd wander over and shop for breakfast on weekends, grab some fresh ground coffee also and head back and have brunch.

 

Has everything you could want, meat, fish, fruit, veg and loads more foody stuff. And as Rach said, lots of options for Chinese food/cooking very close by.

I'm the same - I love central market! - I go every Friday and stock up for the weekend, I even found some amazing sausages last week (who'd have believed it)

I believe there is a fish market in port adelaide somewhere....(or used to be!!)

We used to go to Central Market on late opening night Friday, stock up with grapes, and olives, sun dried tomatoes, cheese, good bread, and cabanas, come home, open a bottle of wine and have a huge picnic with all our goodies... great fun, don't really do it now the kids are older and sports training for them has got in the way, but got some great memories...

 

I love Central Market - one of the main reasons I wouldn't ever want to live any further away from the city than we do - there are indian supermarkets hidden in the backstreets around there, asian grocers, fish shops, specialised butchers (including my fave - Wild Oz - for wild boar ham, croc steaks and marinated roo) everything you could want, and a great atmosphere on a Friday night when there is usually live music and lots of free tasters all over the market!

There is a farmers' market in Willunga. If you fancy a drive south of Adelaide, Willunga's Farmers' Market is open every Saturday rain or shine. Grab some local produce and on your way back visit some wineries and stock on nice McLaren Vale wines. Cleanskins are quite cheap but not nasty.

There's also a fabulous Farmers' Market at the Adelaide Showgrounds http://www.asfm.org.au/ - loads of top chefs go there for their produce

or you can go to gepps cross theres a big fruit and veg market there evry sunday from 6 a.m. i got there most of the time....u just need to pay $1.50 to get in...fish market you can go to fishermans wharf at port adelaide or go to torrens island they got fish there and few veggies as well..hope this helps

Discovered a Greek Warehouse recently near Adam Street and you can buy great breads, cheeses, cold meats, olive oils, herbs, dried fruits, spices and bulk packs of baking goods (flour, sugar etc) at less than 1/2 the regular supermarket prices. Filled a small trolly for just over $35 (costs more than that to fill a basket at Coles or Woolworths)

Foodland is great for meat and fish (I can recommend, Flagstaff Hill, Happy Valley, Pasadena and Norwood) they have brilliant specials on larger 1 - 2 kg packs. I recently got 4 chicken breasts for $3.99, Porterhouse steaks 4 huge ones for $8.99 and 1kg bag of uncooked frozen prawns for $13! I stock my freezer when I see a good bargain.

 

Pasadena and Norwood are new but don't discount local smaller stores - they may not be so pretty and are a bit cramped but prices are good. Check the many flyers that come through the door too for the best speacials in your area.

I've been there too but I was acutually referring to Omega Foods in Adam Street. It is similar to Gaganis Brothers, a little smaller but a different range of

products and brands.
