Hi, we are heading into Adelaide tomorrow for some Christmas shopping and to visit the big man himself at David Jones. Can anyone please recommend a good child friendly (children age 1 and 4) restaurant or café for lunch please? Don't mind the type of food anything from rolls to burgers to pasta just somewhere that the children will have something to do. Thanks in advance. Merry Christmas all x

We rarely bother eating in in any place in the CBD when we have children with us. Most of the time the foodcourts offer a good choice, something for everyone to choose from but little to do as such other than sit and eat your food.

We tend to do what Diane suggested. Grab some sushi or something from one of the food courts and then head outside somewhere.

There is the Princess Elizabeth playground on South Terrace that had a heap of improvements recently

Or we head to the Botainic Gardens somewhere and find a spot under a tree where the kids can play.

If you don't want to go as far as the central market or the southern parklands then on the Grenfell Street side of the McDonalds food court is an open green space with lots of sculpture things for the kids to climb on. You could get something to eat at the food court then head outside to eat. We usually take in sandwiches and buy a frozen coke at Hungry Jacks and go and sit on the grass on the other side of the road in front of the Crowne hotel.

If you're after an eatery with a child play area (why these places even exist is beyond me) you'll be out of luck as it's not the market that is catered for (pardon the pun) in the CBD. As said, a picnic is the best option unless you want to traipse down to the zoo and have a wander. No idea how much that would cost though - probably horrendously expensive.

Wonder what happened to the days when children sat and ate with the parents and playing/running around just didn't happen. Why must everyones offspring these days run amok instead of sitting quietly?

Edit: spelling
