Just researched this today myself. Apparently only the US requires a tri band phone, but they will work just fine in Oz. Have read somewhere that it is worth getting it unlocked before you leave the UK though as it is cheaper.

There is no reason it wont work here, as it does in the UK and they dont need tri band phones. Get all your phones unlocked befor eyou get here. You can get it done cheaply in UK, but they have not got the dodgy man in the market here as they do in the UK, you have to go through the networks here and it can get expensive.
