What do you do at weekends as a family?

Hi

I have not been on here for a while as we changed our minds about Adelaide and was thinking more towards Brisbane.

However, we keep swaying back to moving to Adelaide.

The only thing that we are unsure about is what is there to do at weekends and time off?

We are a family with 2 boys aged 6 & 12. Brisbane, Gold Coast etc... has the theme parks, Australia Zoo, rain forest etc...

Please can anyone tell me what entertainment there is for our boys and us as a family.

Yes the Gold coast has theme parks and the rainforest but are you honestly saying that you would do those every weekend, or most of, or all holidays instead.

 

Here, there is the beach. And the beach. They are to die for. We visited Brisbane a couple fo years ago and I suppose surfers is the closest thing to what Adelaide beaches are. There is miles of them. At Tangalooma Island off the coast of Brissie we fed wild dolphins at sunset. Here I can go on a river cruise each Sunday, if I want, and see wild dolphins in the river for just a few dollars.

 

The surfer clubs are popular. Cleland Wildlife Park is a good place is a good place to go where you can feed the animals. There are also a couple more places, again linked to animals. Adelaide doesn't have any theme parks. Every year, the Adelaide Show comes into town which is a very big deal as for almost 2 weeks, we have fairground rides etc and it is a great day out.

 

Most people tend to hit the water, either in pools or the beach when the sun comes out. Some get in a car and drive to Melbourne or get on the plane and go to Brissie. I liked Brissie but not to live in. Brisbane feels like a city which is what it is. Adelaide is a city although not as large but it just doesn't feel like one. It is lovely here. If you have a choice, come here first and then go to Brissie.

We wouldnt be visiting theme parks every weekend. Its just knowing that they are only a ride away.

In the uk we only live about 1 hour away from Blackpool and Camelot theme park. We dont go very often but its nice that they are not to far away when we do.

I was just worried that if we wanted to do something other than the beach, then it would involve a lot of travelling.

I would like to know what kids and families do apart from the beach.

Don't worry about theme parks, you'll not afford for your kids to go there when you move anyway.lol only joking.

This is what we do most weekends.

 

We cycle to the shops buy some sausages, then go to the lakes and have a picnic whilst the kids play in the park and feed the ducks.

We also go to st kilda where there is a good park for older kids as well as younger kids.

We became a member of cleland, so we go here regularly.

we also head to Semaphore jetty, we fish and go crabbing, good fun.

the kids play in the parks and skateboard park whilst we are at semaphore.

They also have a big waterslide and ferris wheel, bouncy castle ect.

Go to Guameracha wildlife park, to feed roos, this is free

there is also Monata zoo, we havent done that yet.

Adelaide Zoo is lovely and the botanic gardens

if its too hot we stay home and run down to the beach

have a quick game of auzzierules footy, spin a frizby, play catch ect

Also there are loads of indoor outdoor swimming pools, when you visit people take a picnic or barbie stuff as you make it a day out. Yes they have bbq's everywhere.

There is also Greenhills adventure park about an hour away. It has water slides , boats , golf, flying foxes, rock climbing....it'snotlike a big theme park but its a day out.

Both my kids ( one boy & one girl) Played soccer with the school over the winter every sat morning. They had a practice one eve every week. They both go to the local pool for swimming lessons once a week my daughter has just gone up to a squad level where she will go to swim carnivals too.. My daughter has gymnastics twice a week and is now at a level where we will take to compete in competitions. My son also does gymnastics once a week and also competes in the boys comps. My daughter has just started an after school 6 week netball course, and also started little nippers at Moana beach yesterday so we have a very busy schedual throughout the whole week.

I work full time and my wife is part time and although we love our new lives in oz its hard to find enough hours in the day sometimes.

For us family time is not about spending money its quality time together even if its just a walk down the beach, or out in the bush. Saturdays revolves around surf lifesaving, head down to the beach at about 1 loads of kids and other familys, then a few frothy ones on the deck and home in the evening. Theme parks......sounds like a nightmare to me....queuing....in the hot humid heat. There is loads to do here,....what would you do at the weekends in the uk...?, when its not raining, at least here you know the weather is going to be great for the next 5 months.

Have to admit most weekends we either have company or go to friends - mostly bbqs in summer and curry/chilli nights in winter.

Lots to do here and it doesn't cost the earth!

I'm gonna rock the boat now!!! To be honest I do find Adelaide a bit boring at the weekends. The other day we wanted to do a boat trip somewhere and everything was shut. The Port River ones were going but we have done that twice and it's a bit boring. Now before you all get upset and start giving me s**t I really like Adelaide, it's a really nice spacious city, good restaurants and nice beaches. I just think that if it's entertainment you are after then you really can't beat Brissie/Gold Coast, there is so much going on there.

To sum up, if you want to live in a nice friendly spacious city where you can hit the beach (as long as it's at least 30C!!) and lead a fairly chilled out life then go Adelaide. If you are looking for entertainment on a grand scale and want it hot enough to go to the beach all year then go Brissie.

You are right. We don't have kids which is why we probably find it boring. Adelaide tends to cater for kids very well, but not so much for adults.

:)Can see where your comming from SA great, we do have kids so its hard for us to see whats on offer for couples without kids, i guess the beach life is so important out here.

Now...we have no kids and are friends with plenty of ppl here with no kids.

 

We can always find something to do..... We are socialising every weekend, different ppl, different houses and damn good bbqs. We enjoy the beach life style and just travelling to the hills for the views, walking...plenty of sporting areas and of course pubs and restaurants. Maybe we sound boring...but i love getting home from work and taking a stroll on a beach, any beach in the evening!!

 

if we had all the theme parks here it would ruin it....and not make it special to go somewhere else in Oz.

Got a suggestion for SA Great - get yourselves a tandem and spend weekends cycling to a different winery each week! It's what I'd do if the kids weren't here to get bored with all those wines!!
