Hiya all, just been wondering about the little things over in Oz....

Things like....can you get Walker's crisps ? Is there a good variety of Balti houses ?

Does the chocolate taste the same as UK ? Can you get quality British bitter ? (important one that !), what variety of fresh fish is available (being in the Southern Hemisphere), and what other 'goodies' can you get out there that we're akin to, here in the UK ?

Yes you can get some of the same things but at a cost!

 

Not a bitter drinker so cant comment, but still plenty of choice

 

Theres great seafood here flake, snapper, whiting, tuna, crabs, garfish, barra to name but a few

 

As for finding things the same just remember its 11,000 miles away so if you expect everything to be the same please be prepared for a shock. Its not like going to Spain.

Know what you mean it is nice to have the comforts of home. Haven't really come across a good Balti house (not many of them around to be honest). You may have to book yourself into a cooking course before you leave. Chocolate does taste different, but you can get the swiss chocolate which is great, I understand it all has to do with the quality of the milk. Cider is pretty good here, especially if you buy it up in the hills. You will find places that carry the british goods, but as mentioned by another poster it can come at a cost, but there are also a heck of a lot of things that are the same.

i didn't really like the chocolate, however Crunchie bars are way nicer in Oz. When they get a little warm the honeycomb just sticks in your mouth in splodges of goo. It's great.

I've had Fullers and Youngs Beers and Guinness since arriving here. In fact there is more familiar names on the shelves than I thought I would find. However, try the aussie brands as they are just as good and can save you cash.

Chocolate, i'm told tastes different although it tastes the same to me. Something added so the rumour goes to stop it melting too easily. Hasn't stopped Joe getting covered in the stuff.

The only thing I miss which I haven't seen but been told is about is pickle. Not worried if its not branston pickle but a cheese sandwich just isn't the same without it.

Try Coles at Marion (if you can stand the gates of Hades that is the Marion Centre), they sell Branston Pickle, Marmite (Our Mate), Batchelors Mushy Peas, proper gravy browning etc etc.....we even found McVities choccie Digestives and Hob Nobs, although you have to really miss a biscuit to want to pay over $4 per packet!!

 

As forthe whole "Oh, forget the UK, you're in Australia now" argument - I spent 41 years being used to stuff and I'm can't change my tastes overnight. I buy what I like, and if that means I pay a bit more for something I love to eat, then so be it. I am, after all, an adult and can spend my hard earned dollars on what I blooming well like!! Aussie food is good too, but y'know, sometimes you just want nice gravy and a packet of Walkers Cheese and Onion.....

Come here, enjoy the good stuff (there's lots of it), and blend it together with the stuff from Blighty that you still want and enjoy.

Walkers, no sorry, nor Quavers, nor Monster Munch, nor Minstrels - these are what my children always request from visitors! (unless you're so desperate you pay something like 10 times the face value in specialist shops)

 

Balti Houses - not sure but apparently there's a pretty good English-style indian on Goodwood Road - plenty of places to buy spices though to make your own

 

Chocolate, well there's Haigh's chocolate factory which does free tours and tastings - proudly South Australian and trained with the best Swiss chocolatiers...Cadbury's have a big factory on Tasmania but am reliably informed that it doesn't taste quite the same as English Cadburys...they do lots of different flavoured bars though - like Tira Misu flavour which I'm assured is delish!

 

Beer - hubby brews his own and there are a couple of very nice microbreweries around, but the main difference is the temperature they serve it at, so if you like it warm and flavoursome, get some home-brew on the go!

 

Fish - best place is on Grand Junction Road where you can get everything from Marlin steaks to Gummy Shark to Oysters - open 7 days a week. Supermarkets generally don't have a great choice, and watch out for Basa which is really artificially bleached Viet Cong Cat Fish or something revolting, but seems to be the supermarkets' favourite. Find a decent fishmonger instead. The Adelaide Central Market has plenty. In fact, the market is good for all sorts of things - I've even seen Strong Yorkshire Tea on sale there, and the asian supermarkets sell stuff you won't even have dreamed of!

 

Foodland stores all over generally sell stuff like Branston, McVities Digestives, Hob Nobs, Bisto gravy powder, Pickled red cabbage, Ambrosia Custard and Rice Pudding, Aunt Bessies yorkshire puddings (yukK!) and the like, and not generally much more expensive than their Australian counterparts.

LOL OK I will be the first one to start!!! Please attempt to blend into the Aussie way of life. Substitute Penguins for Tim Tams, McVities for Arnotts. What's wrong with Aussie chocolate? It may not be quite as milky but who cares?? Isn't the whole idea of emigrating to another country to try and fit into that culture.....or at least try.

If you look around you can get most things, there are a few pommy shops kicking around and some internet shops selling nearly everything you want, but you'll pay a premium. When I'm down Glenelg i always get a yorkie bar, they're fantastic, and they have walkers crisps too and a cherry coke....

 

There are some pommy pubs too, mainly to the north but you can get a pint of cider (yummy) or a boddingtons / tetley's. I regularly go to the pub in the city for a cider to remind me of the UK. I think our fish and chips are nicer, but you guys have such a choice in the UK off the shelf from a chippy, where as ours seem to prefer to cook fresh...

 

I'm an aussie and when I was in the midlands I used to go to london once a month to get my fix of timtams and vegimite. I find it quite sad that so many of you guys turn your back on the UK so quickly, are you that embarrased to want a pint of Tetley's and a Balti, cause I'm not embarrased at all going to an aussie pub in the UK drinking VB with a vegimite sandwich. I'm pretty sure it's not part of your visa requirements to turn your back on bisto.

Sorry, I couldn't help myself Traci. To be honest though, I never really liked the food in the UK anyway, so there's not a lot to miss, for me at least

Hmmm on the subject of choc.... UK cadburys is way too sweet, so are Mars bars etc. Your Coke tastes like diet coke and Thornton's comes close but not quite to Haighs. Haighs go out and buy their cocoa beans at source each year to get the blend they want. Just smell that choc smell as you walk into their factory shop and you will know what I mean.

 

For those of you who wish to get their tastebuds ready for the Aussie onslaught there is a site in the Uk where you can purchase Jaffas, timtams, cherry ripes, vegemite (somerfields had Vegemite on their shelves when I was there in Jan) and other great Aussie specialities. I think it is called aussieshop.co.uk or something google and you will find. I have got the rellies hooked on jaffas so it's cheaper to order them from this site than for me to spend out posting them.

 

Oh and Pete you must actually do the shopping more cos just about any supermarket sells Branston and you also might like to try Rosella's fruity pickle, which is great on cheese on toast.
