Hi Everyone.

It's my first time on P.I.A. We have just come back from adelaide and decided to go for it and start the process. I've just started the Trade part of the process and might have the chance of a company sponsoring me but didn't know how many dollars you will need to earn to have a reasonable standard of living. Hopefully won't have a big mortgage when we get there after the house is sold. Any advice on areas would be nice as we only really went down south. There seemed to be be quite alot of new builds which looked very nice for the amount you would have to pay compared to here!

when we were there didn't really get a good idea what things cost as most of the time ate out due to no kitchen but it didn't seem as cheap as most people think it is.

The amount i will be earning is around the 65000 dollar mark and wondered if this is good. Any adice would be appreciated

Ive never been myself so cant help on the areas, I do know a little about the house buying bit, if you buy a new build the price advertised may not include things that are standard in the UK, such as footings, services( gas ,water, electric.) garden fences, paths and the inside specification will be very basic, you could add $30000 to $60000 or more to headline price. You can still get alot for your money but best to make sure you Know what your getting.

As for $65000 a year, it is not a bad wage, I think the average for South Australia is about $45000 so with little or no morgage im sure you would be ok but better wait for replies from the people already there, im sure there will be many.

where are you hoping to go and what type of work are you in. We really enjoyed Adelaide when we were there.Even though we went up to bribane/goldcoast we still liked adelaide the best. The beaches didn't seem quite as nice but it felt we could settle there easier. Have you got any family out there? We haven't but i'm sure we will make some friends if this site is anything to go by. When we were there everyone was really nice and my daughters had no trouble making freinds.

Hi Steve & Tracy,

 

One thing you should consider when thinking about salary expectations is superannuation.

Basically they deduct 9.5% of your gross earnings for your pension.

 

If you do get a job offer make sure it's xxx plus superannuation.

 

On balance i think that the cost of living in Adelaide is only fractionally cheaper than the UK. House prices are rising rapidly but invariably you do get more for your money.

I think you are right as regarding Adelaide over the East coast. Have to confess though its all down to research as unlike you we have never been. You are also correct about making friends. We have met some great people through this place and hope to keep in touch when we eventually move over there.

Hello and welcome to the site Steve and Tracy;).

You are right about cost of living it is a little cheaper on account of some things being more and some things being less, a lot of things work out the same, which is ok if you are on a good salary, but if you are on a low or average one ( av. being 40,000) it is a little harder.

65k is a pretty good salary, and should think even with a mortgage you'll be right!

Agree with Sarah - on that wage you should be fine. We are finding everything balances to similar to UK in price

 

Only things that there is a definite difference on is the houses (much bigger and more for your money) and petrol (less than half the uk price but bigger cars so needs to be !)

Hi, I am going ( hopefully) as a painter and decorator,although hope to move iinto property maintanence my current job and then renovate houses if it is viable and can get a licence. Im going with my wife, daughter and 3 suitcases, we have no family there and no job we dont know where we will end up, quite a well thought out plan by my standards.

Hi there, we are also in the process of awaiting our visa and hope to be there anytime between november 07 and may 08, sooner rather than later hopefully!

 

Anyway, my husband is also a painter & decorator, who does all aspects of the trade including specialist paint work and paint effects. What are the wages like for this trade, he was hoping to be employed for a little while to enable us to get a mortgage a bit easier and then go self employed again as he is currently.
