Can you recommend Adelaide?

Hi everyone,

 

We have been looking to emigrate to the Gold Coast (Myself, hubby and 3 kids) but a chance of a job has come up in Adelaide so I was just wondering if you could all tell me the great things about this area!

 

We were looking at Queensland because it appears to be a cosmopolitan area with year round sunshine. What is the climate like in South Australia? One of the main reasons we want to leave the uk is because of the awful weather so I don't want to move somewhere that is cold! Is there plenty for teenagers to do? Good private schools? Universities (I'm thinking ahead!).

 

And of course, most importantly, what are the shops like?!

 

Any help from yourselves would be appreciated, it's such a major decision and I'm just getting more and more overwhelmed by the whole process.

 

The job would not actually be in Adelaide but more towards Maslin Beach if any one knows that area.

Hi Emms,

 

Welcome to the forum.

 

I think Adelaide is somewhere you have to visit to really make up your mind about her.

 

Just a few thoughts..........

 

She is very different to the Gold Coast.

 

Quieter,very family friendly and more affordable.

Great beaches and opportunities for outdoor activities.

Lots of places to visit locally then further a field we have the Stunning Flinders Ranges and then on into the Outback.

 

Obviously you would be living near Maslin Beach for work so you would have a huge choice of good and affordable subburbs to choose from.

From on the beach to semi rural in the hills overlooking McLaren Vale wine producing region.

 

Private education here is excellent,some world class.It's affordable too depending upon which school/ college you choose..

Teenagers can have plenty to do - more outdoor pursuits though - get em' involved with the local surf clubs,great for socialising as well:)

 

My big downside for you here is that it does get cold in winter here.

Nowhere near the long ,dreary, wet and depressing UK winters.

The days can be sunny with 16c - great for getting all the jobs done outside.

Nights can be chilly with temps that can give the odd frost.

Houses here are badly insulated and heated poorly - in general.

 

The climate here is often described as Mediterranean ,we have 4 seasons.

Temps can range from chilly winter nights to 47c in the hight of summer ( rare to see that temp though). A good point is the low humidity here - I know the Gold Coast has much higher humidity.

We enjoy the changing seasons rather than a consistent temp, it gives you a sense of change and makes you look forward to the next summer:)

 

It looks like you have a visa that allows you to settle anywhere in Australia??

If you find one area is not to your liking you can always make a smaller move intersate later

It was pretty much what Tyke has wrote, only alot more detail with regard to the Sport, music and festivals that we have down here...

Adelaide is awesome. Especially the hills (where I live). So beautiful in the Autumn - reminds me a lot of the pennines. Adelaide is better than Queensland for sure. Goldcoast is very touristy btw.

Adelaide gets sunshine in winter, but the average winter temp is obviously lower than Qld, and it can feel very cold at night. So, perhaps it's not so much year round sunshine that's the issue but temperature. Both places get a fair amount of winter rain, but the GC also gets a lot of rain in the summer (in fact, more than Adelaide gets in winter). So, if you're looking for higher winter temperatures, then Qld has the edge, but if you don't like rain, Adelaide might be a better choice. I reckon that the GC and Brisbane are more cosmopolitan and have better shops, but higher prices.

 

It's hard to compare the two because they are very different. Personally, if it wasn't for the humidity and the higher house prices, I'd find Qld very tempting ...

have lived in Adelaide and gold coast and in the end it depends!

 

the sunshine is not year round anywhere in Oz Adelaide gets a decent long summer (3 months or more) and very mild winters and very very little rain with very low humidity year round, some very nice beaches. def has some of the best schools and university in Oz. The rental and housing prices are much cheaper in Adelaide

 

where as gold coast is 20 degrees ish year round but it rains a lot and it is very humid most of the year.

I found the gold coast a bit like a 'spanish holiday' resort cheesy and commercial (not a plus for me but it may be for some)

 

 

in my opinion Adelaide would be more cosmopolitan than the gold coast, better restaurants and a classer night out.

Thank you so much for all your replies, Adelaide and South Australia sound beautiful, although I might avoid the nudist beach, not sure about all those wrinkly dangly bits!! I think that the rest of the family are still keen on Queensland but we'll have to wait and see where we end up!

 

You definately all seem a very friendly bunch and all very helpful! I might be back again soon to ask some more questions if that's ok.

I love the Gold Coast for a holiday, the houses are nice, everything is green and lush, the beaches are beautiful, and everything seems new and shiny - it does have a lot going for it but I really don't think I could live there long term.

 

The main advantages that Adelaide has is that the climate is much dryer, and that it has some history and culture. There are old stone houses and grand(ish) 19th century public buildings. On the Gold Coast its all new and you wonder if it's going to look tatty in a few years time. Adelaide is a very cultural city with theatres and festivals and I suppose it feels more European, whereas the Gold Coast feels more American. Adelaide also has lovely beaches and the Adelaide Hills are beautiful especially in the autumn.

Queensland is better in the Winter. It rains most of the Summer which is why it is green and lush. Extremely humid too.

HAve a look at the rain fall for both area's - disregard this years for QLD for obvious reasons.

 

As the kids get older there will be less for them to do in Adelaide, but just because you live near the theme parks possibly in QLD doesn't mean to say you will be in them every weekend - imagine the cost!

 

QLD has it's own problems, especially in the smaller towns were it's harder to fit in, I have rellies up there with teenage kids and they aren't having fun and have moved several times.

Ahh the nudist beach, now that brings back some memories. When i was about 8/9 my dad had a job down by the seafront.(he builds swimming pools)He had to call into his job and then would be pretty much free until late afternoon when he needed to go back and check things.Anyway he decided to keep me off school for the day and take me to the beach.Being midweek the beach was quite but i remember pointing out quite a few sights before dad bless him realised he had taken me to a nudist beach.

Adelaide has 9 months of hot to warmish weather. 3 months is chilly, but still a lot of sunny days around 15 c. Rain will spoil your plans for outdoor activities a handfull of times a year. Bali is 5 1/2 hours flight time away for around $1000 for 5 to 7 days pp to break up the 12 weeks of winter & you can eat out every night for around $8 pp. The Riverland is 2 or 3 hours drive & has more sunshine hours than any where in Australia.

Job at Maslin Beach..... hmm, that sounds interesting as it's a quiet area with minimal employment and I see someone has already alerted you to the fact that it's the local nudist beach!

Gold Coast is not for everyone ......... and definitely not for me .... sort of swankier Blackpool in my opinion (which I freely acknowledge is worth little and based on my own strange perceptions on life)

It all depends what you are a) used to and b) seek and c) like.

One person's pleasure dome is another's private hell etc .......
