Hello,

My name is Leah, I am new to this forum. We have decided to make the move:shocked:. We have recently been to a seminar and have booked a consultation for the 01/03/11. I am in the process of completing my skills assessment.

 

The NEXT step : I was planning a 176 visa (SS) but apparently OT is not on it:sad:. I was suprised, there appears to be a lot of jobs advertised in SA. Anyway, now looks like we will be applying for a 175 (skilled indep). I am happy with this, but was hoping to speed up the process with a 176:sad:.

 

Anyone got any info on OT jobs in Adelaide - availability, pay etc.............

Sorry cant help you with regards pay etc would suggest you check out jobs for OT's and see how much they are offering and what is required to see where you fit in. Have you considered looking for a job sponsorship? I know there are some visas where you are sponsored by a company but get PR straight off else there is the 457 visa. If an employer sponsored you, you could come out to Oz and begin your life here whilst you waited for your 175 to be granted.

Hi Leah,

There are a few of us OTs on this site, that I am sure would be able to give you some advice. It is quite surprising that we have been removed from the 176 list, but they do change things all the time so you never know, it maybe added again in the near future! You should have no problems in finding a position, there are a broad range of opportunities for OTs here in many different sectors, such as Health, Government, Non for Profit Organisations and Work Cover Companies. Its a great place to develop your skills and grow within the profession! I would suggest starting to look into the process of the practice audit, that you have to undertake once you start working here, as it’s useful that you understand it so you can explain it to potential employers, as not all of them are famililar with the process!

You want to look at working in the WorkCover sector like I do, they are cying out for OT's the wges at our place for an OT is about $60,000 but our company are the lowest paid, you can get amuch higher wage with other Rehabilitation Providers. Send me a PM if you require further info

Don't know much about the visa process etc BUT we just had a guy start at work (migrated from the UK) and his partner is an OT. She pretty much had her pick of jobs when she got here given Adelaide is crying out for OTs. So that's good...?!

hi Leah, I m sorry that I cant help out with info for the visa process, as im a pommie OT working in NZ and now moving to adelaide, so its a different proxess for us, however I have heard about the sponsorship process whereby if you apply for a job and the employer wants you over the other candidates, that employer can sponsor you for your visa application.

 

I have just completed a 3 month locum in SA, to figure out if we really wanted to make the move, and adelaide is lovely, salaries are much better than NZ, and also for comparison of length of service higher than the NE of UK, when i completed the locum job i was working in health and they paid for flights and accomodation for three months, as it was rural. the SA health website gives you lots of updates on jobs available and also gives you an idea of the salary bands. to give you an idea senior level AHP 2 is 71,000 - 80,000 approx. which is great. the other really great thing about health SA is that they have a salary sacrificing thing, which means that you can designate to pay mortgage, childcare etc.. as a direct debit from your salary b4 you get taxed. there is a limit and i think its about 7- 9% of your annual income can be salary sacrificed b4 tax. the company that i will b working for dont offer this though, im going to be starting end of march with a company that specialises in work cover serious injury clients.

 

I will know more about the world of OT in SA after that date

Im debating whether to take with me any books/journals as I know my baggage allowance will end up being more like Tons rather than kg's by the time I have packed everything! What's the costs like in Adelaide for purchasing books or the second hand market like for replacing OT books?

Can you box them up and send by sea? Much cheaper. Bringing them in a suitcase would not be my priority.

Books, including textbooks, are pretty expensive here. You may be able to get second hand from UniSA students. They sometimes advertise on the student noticeboards. As for access to journals, it is worth checking what is freely available on-line electronically or if you are working through the public health system, there is access to some journals and databases. I am sure you could also borrow off work colleagues.

Wow is it just me or is that just slightly scary? So you can be newly qualified with absolutly no experience and get work in the workers compensation field? I would have thought that was one of the areas where experience would be esential?

There is a shortage of OT's because most OT tend to not like all the paperwork involved

Hi, I'm an OT too and slightly older than yourself .. I'm due out in Adelaide July this year. As the others have said you can get work within the compensation field, however, from what I understand to be able to practice you have to be supervised for 6 months, so your employer would need to agree to this. You can only register with AHPRA if you have this agreement and this is on the limited registration. I have 10 years post qualification working experience behind me and will still have to apply for limited reg initially.

Have you started the visa process yet? It took me 10 months from start to finish including the IELTS exams to get the 189 PR skilled migrant visa. You need that have all of your degree and uni transcripts certified by a lawyer or at a court plus other documentation so make use of the uni photocopiers now LOL. If you want any more info PM me and I'll be happy to help. good luck with your final year.

you can do IELTS now, you have to book anyway. let me know and i'll send you some stuff to help you. compensation field is basically our no win no fee stuff here. they value OT's assessments as they take into account future needs,specialist equipment, housing adaptations probabilities of returning to worketc. what i can gather from the job sites they also do a lot of return to work etc. as a newly qualified OT i wouldn't be comfortable doing this but i guess it depends on your past working experience. when i qualified i went straight in to a reablement post that was still developing and was the pilot for the county. however, i had 5 years rehab experience so it didn't phase me but others it might. in 2016 the new royal Adelaide hospital will be opening so an ideal opportunity for new OT's.
