And thought I would say hello and introduce myself. My name is Carla, my husband and 2 children (although soon to be 3!) live in France and have done for almost 2 years. Not everything is right here though and we are being drawn back to our first wish of Oz when we first contemplated emigrating, we didn't apply because of the distance and wondering if we could leave family and friends, now we know we can!!!!

We are at the very early stages, just trying to get paperwork together for TRA. My husband is a plasterer so we are going for the Skilled 136 visa, hopefully, we don't plan to use an agent, as I do have quite alot of time on my hands (sssshhhhh - don't tell hubby!).

I am sure I will have some questions for all you lovely lot who are a bit or maybe alot further down the road than me.

Hope to be speaking to you all very soon,

Carla

Hi betty

Thanks for the quick welcome! I notice you are living in Adelaide at the moment. How long have you lived there and what do you think of it? Can I ask for some good old fashioned honesty now.....

One of the reasons I am not happy here in France is because I thought I would be fluent in the language by now - I'm not, so I am finding it really hard to fit in. I like to chat and in the UK I had neighbours, friends, school mums that I could chat to and socialise with. I am hoping that going to another english speaking country that I will have that again. Do you think that is the case? Will the Aussie's be accepting of us? Also, there is no way I can work here in France unless I am fluent and a life without doing anything other than housework is depressing! So that's another hurdle, I am hoping that when I do want to work again, I will be able to get work - how easy should that be in Adelaide, just getting an office job or something?

Look forward to hearing from you,

Carla X

Hi Carla & Trev

Welcome to the site.

We are in very early stages too. Just sent off TRA Assessment for skills. Expected to take 6-8 weeks.

Its a very friendly site.

Lots of questions.

There are lots of brits on this site who have moved or who are going to Adelaide. I think lots stay in touch on the other side, so you would defo have that if you went to Australia.

Julia.

Just to reassure you, the Aussies are very friendly on the whole. We have a son married to an Aussie girl and she has in the past year befriended an english family who moved out last June. We also have made numerous friends as we have been travelling out for the past 10 years or so, and are now planning to move out to Australia, Visa's permitting.

The other thing is that there are also many English families who have emigrated and are very easy to spot because of their accents. They normally welcome some conversation and are very friendly.

Hi Carla and Trev,

Welcome to the site, I'm sure you'll find everyone so helpful on it I know I have. We too live in France and are wanting to move to Adelaide after doing much research. We have lived in Brittany now for nearly 10 years and although a fab place to bring up your kids we are now wanting a little more out of life. Just to go to the cinema or find something open on a Sunday would be good - or better still to argue with a shop assistant in your own language when you take something faulty back and not just receive a shrug. I know what you mean with the language, how ever good you get it still isn't good enough to go out and find a job.

We have just started on this road to immigration but with being out of our professions for 10 years now finding the route difficult.

Have you found anyone to translate official documents as yet and do you know how much it costs at all?

Good luck with your move, I hope it all runs smoothly.

Kind regards

Janet

Hi Janet

Thanks for your message. Luckily my OH has been a builder here since we arrived in the Charente in May 2005 so I am hoping that the devis and factures that we have will be enough evidence that he has been working, including the Chambre de Metiers stuff. I got his Attestation from the Chambre de Metiers translated by Mrs Ailsa Norrey Hopkins. She lives in France over by the German border I think but I sent her the document via email, she translated it and sent it back via email - all very professionally done and very quick. Her email is anhopkins@gmail.com so give her an email and I am sure she will be able to help you out. What have you both been doing for 10 years? What are you hoping to get a visa on? I guess like us, you know that you could never go back to the UK - it really is going to the dogs - whereabout are you from in the UK? We come from Essex - definitely NO GOING BACK THERE! Scary!

Sorry about all the questions, just nice to know someone is in the same boat.

Hope to hear from you soon, and maybe we can be of further help to each other. What stage are you at?

Regards,

Carla

Hi Carla,

You have already made one move, so the next will be easy especially to an English speaking and very friendly country.

We spent the last 25 years moving all over the place with the RAF and now we are glad that we actually have a very nice home here in Adelaide. It may be the otherside of the world from |UK but home is where the heart is and ours is definately here!!. rOLL ON OUR pr AND WE WILL BE DEFO SETTLED.
