Moving away from the UK for the first time

Hi, my name is Sam, I'm 25, I've been offered a new job in Adelaide and will be moving there at the end of November. I've joined pomsinadelaide to maybe make some friends and potentially meet some like minded pommes down under.

Does anyone know of a good place to get a flat share sorted, I'm reluctant to get a house straight away on my own til I get to know the place a bit better for a short term period, but will do if it comes to it, as I won't be able to see it til I get there. I believe I will be working in the city centre if this makes any difference, so will want to be in close proximity to the centre of Adelaide.

Also, I've not been to Australia before, anyone got any tips on typical British things that I could take into the office on the first day to put a smile on their faces?

Thanks in advance

Welcome to the site Dezza - most important thing you can take into the office is your sense of humour...keep that with you at all times and you won't go far wrong. They're generally a friendly, welcoming lot over here. Not sure about flat shares but somewhere like www.gumtree.com.au might be a good place to start. Keep us updated with your progress, and have a browse through the site as I think I have seen a thread recently where some others of about your age are arranging a meetup, so hopefully you can get in touch with some of them and join them when you get here.

This is one of the threads I ws thinking of http://www.pomsinadelaide.com/forum/socialising/25750-hey-im-new-22-surrey-d-3.html

I've got some little rubber ducks with england flags on them. Might take one of them into the office when my contract is finally sorted out! Or just like little england flags. A jar of marmite if you like it to spark up the whole vegemite versus marmite debate. A map of the UK so you can stick a flag in where you lived so people are reminded your not from London. The amount of times ive been asked ' so when did you leave london?' *eyes roll* Just a few ideas which spring to mind.

I see you are from Nottingham whereabouts, so were we, in fact we were there only 2 weeks ago at Ruddington, my brothers house.

You could always take a copy of the Ashes urn into the office,or a piccie of the queen, or a piccie of juliar gillard, or tony abbot.......

there should be heaps of flat shares going in the city lots of students around.

Thanks guys, there are some really great tips here, I'll make sure to take every opportunity to meet new people, as the last thing I want is to end up being lonely and then feeling homesick.

The easyroommate.com.au link is really useful to me, I'll probably end up using this :)

I'll be sure to let you know how I'm getting one once my visa is approved, as I'll only be given about 2 weeks notice before I have to book my flights and find some accommodation.

Thanks again
