Hi, I'm Lizzy,

Just arrived from the uk with my husband Teddy - A kitchen fitter - My son Ashley (24) currently working as a window cleaner - ( who's also hoping to meet people of his own age & make some friends ) as he has come over with just me & his Dad & his little sister Molly (8)

We've settled in Hallet Cove. most of us loving it , but I'm homesick - missing my Mum & other Son

First time posting anything on PIA - didn't quite get the welcome i was hoping for.

Lets hope for a better day tomorrow & maybe some sunshine ! :jiggy:

Will take a while Lizzy, especially if you were leaving family members behind. It is terribly difficult so our thoughts will be with you.

Same as us actually but no kids in tow when we came, mind you that was over 20 years ago and were still here.

Understand how you must/may be feeling, what are you are going through but, on the bright side, it is REALLY cheap to phone or Skype home compared to the pound a minute it used to be so theres a positive for you.

Hello and welcome :)

I just saw you posted an earlier message but it was posted under your own profile, a visitor message, so none of the forum members would have seen it most likely, or else I am sure you would have had replies to it.

Glad you've found the forum and figured out how to post new threads :) I am sure others will be along soon to say hello.

FWIW there is a Socialising section your son might want to have a read of and post to as there are lots of other people closer to his age making contact in a thread over there.

Good luck settling in. The homesickness may well come and go and sometimes be overwhelming but if other aspects of your life are good, try and keep it in perspective and realise it does happen and usually will pass. Some people really struggle and don't settle because of it (and other reasons) but many others do. Give things a chance and I am sure you'll be settling soon.

Enjoy and see you round the forum.

Hi Izzy, welcome!!

Its early days and you are going to feel homesick, I was so suprised how soon after landing I felt homesick. I thought I would only feel it after a few months of being here! I think you will feel it even more if you have left one of your boys in the UK. Give it time and im sure things will get a bit easier. I have only been here a couple of months but some days I feel homesick and some days I dont even think about it. I left South Africa when I was 18 to go to the UK and it took me a good couple of years to settle so I am thinking it will be the same again!

For now just take one day at a time and enjoy the adventures Oz has to offer.

I agree a bit of sunshine helps too!!

Hi good luck. It is so personal it is difficult to know what will happen, some people get over the homesickness quite quick, others it comes and goes in bouts. Personally I think you know within a few months if this is really for you if you listen to your own instincts. I really think some people andIi am one are not suited to the vibe. If you know it is not you then have to consider if it is worth up rooting and going back or if you will never really setltle but can tolerate it for other reasons ie familly and jobs etc. Every body goes on the UK is awful but that misses the point really, it being bad there does not make you like it here or feel at home. One thing is for sure is that if homesickness really overwhelms you go and get some help or you can develop depression which I have come very close to on occasions. However it is very early days for you and you may soon feel better. I think having your mother and other son in Engalnd will make it quite hard. A lady who taught me Italian left her older son in Italy and still found that very hard three years on. Good luck though and know you are not alone most of us ho through this

Hi I leave the UK on the 3rd July with my 2 girls age 7 and 15 but my 20 yr old son is staying in the UK so i understand how it must feel, as i am now preparing for the move here there is a feel of guilt, but i have hopes he will make the move, he has stated he is not ready yet so being 21 when we leave he's an adult and he could of easily gone off to university and not come back, as alot of university students do. hope things get better.

Well the sun was shining and it was not 40 so yes I do feel better. I think I feel better too because I have accepted it is not for me for ever and i have let that dream dissolve if that makes sense. I know I want to go back to Europe sometime, jsut am picking my moment and I have learnt loads out here about myself and Australia and England so in that way it si positive plus my son has done really well which is key. Also because i have PR I know if I go back I have 5 years to change my mind. I think knowing you are not trapped really helps that can make you feel quite desparate. Hope you are over that sad ness for a good long time Lizzy

Hi Lizzy and Maria,

Its amazing how coincidences happen as yes Maria you are staying in the same house which Lizzy stayed in when first arrived!

You'll know now Lizzy where to pop over for a cuppa, lol.

Have a great day!

Welcome to Oz.

I'm sure you'll enjoy the adventure as you begin to settle in and find your feet. I'm quite near you (about 10 mins away) and on holidays until end of Jan so ... if you fancy a coffee, let me know.

Hi Lizzy. You can PM people :) All you do is go over to the right of the thread where a persons username is, click on it (left click iirc) and then you'll get a little menu box appear on screen. Click on 'Private Message' and it will open to a new window for you where you can send a PM to that person. Its a bit like writing a post then, only it will be seen by the person you are PM'ing and no one else.

Hope that helps.
