Aldinga to the City

Hi

Wondered if people could give advice re travelling to Adelaide city centre from Aldinga, for socialising purposes? We are due to come over in july. Having spent 4 weeks in adelaide in January we fell in love with Aldinga and the surrounding area. My hubbie now has a job in Noarlunga which is perfect and means we can set up home in the south. After a bottle of wine, we started to discuss the logistics of travelling into the centre to say see a band or go to the theatre (without the car). Please don't think we are party animals, far from it but just wondered if its possible to do this once in a while or if its just too far?? I'm sure i heard that the train line was going to be extended to Aldinga? . We did think about living in Hallet Cove ? Any advice would be greatly received. We have two children and i don't want to move them around so want to get the location right. Thanks Michelle

It's reasonably reliable although some of the bus companies recently received fines for the amount of late running services, but it's pretty good. Services seem to become sparse after 7pm and pretty much stop altogether after midnight.

From someone living in Aldinga I would say unless one of you were driving it would be a very expensive taxi ride or impossible!

hi, We live in Moana, just a bit up from Aldinga, It costs us about $80 -$100 in taxi fare from the city - so, we dont do it very often. So, Aldinga would be a bit more in price than that. We tend to go in as a group and split costs.

There's a neat taxi fare calculator - Hallett Cove seems to cost around $49 to the city - it looks fairly accurate as I live at Goodwood and it costs approximately $15 - here's a link http://www.taxifare.com.au

Moana is great, we live in Sellicks Beach, but I do love Moana.

 

Great beach and access to it and there is Moana Surf Life Saving Club if your kids like the sea.

Aldinga is really and truly very far from the city. Have you ever tried google maps? The "Get Directions" button will help planning your journey.

 

That will give you the best estimate (obviously factor in traffic lights, traffic etc)- I did it for you and I assumed you went to Gouger St in the city and that would realistically add over 2 hr to your evening out. Plus the lag time for the taxi back....

 

Please do not feel I'm being negative, but it looks to me like sometimes people are so set living near an affordable beach suburb that they forget they can be cut-off from city life (well, that is if you need some city life, some folks on here are happy not going to the city very often).

 

Best to test these things when you get here. Maybe get yourselves a short-term rental in Aldinga and try it out?

I think what most people don't realise too is that teenagers might want a bit more life than that offered in the far out beach suburbs, and even for younger kids - if they happen to excel in any particular field, you'll find a much wider choice of clubs and activities if you are at least within an easy driving distance of the city.

 

I think some of the beach suburbs are a bit like Devon and Cornwall - beautiful, stunning in the summer, and friendly places, but it really limits your social and working options if you live so far out of the centre. Great place to go for weekends and holidays though!!

Would prob cost $100.00 in a taxi but if u catch the train the bus. which now has a late one back that can be done for $20.00 But it would take about 45 mins City to Noarlunga then 40 mins back to Aldinga

I know exactly what you mean Diane. We currently live in Sheffield which is on the edge of the peak district national park. We often go into the park at weekends and have commented how beautiful it is. However truth be told, its great to live near the city where all the amenities are at our fingertips and the children have a variety of clubs , parks and museums to dip into. I'm staring to wonder if i'm more town mouse than country mouse!! So whats the ideal location ? Hubbie has secured a job in Noarlunga, is Hallett Cove the answer ? Are there any other areas we should consider?? Any advice appreciated xx

If you enjoy the things you describe you know what your answer is! Somewhere near hills, parks and the city. I don't think Hallett Cove offers what you are looking for either.

You sound like you were set on living on the same obvious suburbs everyone seems to be going to (please no-one to feel offended it's just that people seems to go for what everyone else does... maybe for a sense of security!)

 

Why not look at the suburbs in the south-east of the city? They have lots of options for you, and they are not far from the beach. I live at less than 20 min away from Brighton and 10-15 min from Stirling or Cleland. I go to the hills often, to the city and the drive to the beach is virtually a straight line. Easy!

We live in Woodcroft which is about 15 mins to Noarlunga. We are near parks, can see the hills and 20kms from the City. We love the area and feel it has all we need as a family. Hubby works in Cavan. It takes him 45 mins to get to work and an hour to get back.

 

Best to get here have a drive around and see what suburbs you like the look of then see what the area has to offer you as a family. We drove around lots of suburbs when we were looking for a house to buy and ruled out some, for our own reasons, and concentrated on the ones we got the best feel for.

 

No job is set in stone so deciding on an area dependant upon job doesnt do it for me (personal view). I go with what feels right.
