If you have a full UK drviers license then you can just go and get a full SA drviers license, no test needed. You even get your UK license back. There is a fee for each year the license is valid for (you can choose how long you want it for) plus an admin fee.

I think that if you have a full British license then you only have to pass a theory test but I'm not sure.

No test needed at all now Ali!! - not like a few years ago, I had to take a theory and a manual test. Nervewracking it was!!!

Yep so to the OP, just take your UK license in to a rego office within 3 months of arrival.

But only if you have a full license right? Does this apply to all nationalities?

Driving licenses from the following countries are 'recognised' so if someone has held a full license from any of these countries in the last 5 years, they don't have to undertake driving tests in SA

What about Indian License?

An Indian license would be classed as 'Non-recognised' so you'd have to pass the Australian road rules theory test. You'd then be issued a temporary driving permit, which is valid for one month, during which time you'd be required to pass the practical driving test.

I did my licence about 6 weeks ago now, and I only paid for 1 year, which was about $40.

It works out cheaper if you pay for more years (maximum of 10years). If I remember rightly it was around $300 for 10 years.

(Correct me if I'm wrong)
