Are we too old

Hi new to Poms in Adeliade,

 

we are in the process of deciding to emigrate to Adelaide next year. However, I am 49years old a nurse and my husband (46yrs) is an Urban Planner, two teenage daughters. we have been informed that we can come over on a Chain Migration Visa if were lucky as my brother lives in Adelaide. Our main concern is there any jobs for Planners? and also is there lots of jobs for nurses.

 

But most of all are we too old ?

Yes I have a district nursing specialist degree and my husband has a Master in Town Planning.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

 

I would suggest you use seek.com.au as a guide for the availability of jobs in your husbands field of work as it is quite specialised. If you look under the classification 'Design and Architecture' and then the sub-classification 'Urban Planning and Design' there are 2 jobs listed and 1 of them is in New Zealand! The results would indicate there is not a high level of demand for this role. However this is not always the case, it may be that this industry is 'not what you know, but who you know' and jobs are not advertised. I worked on a large scale engineering/construction project in Adelaide and my manager had never applied for a job in his field, he had always been head hunted. You mention your brother lives here, so he could prove valuable if he has contacts who could put in a 'word' for you. Sometimes having a specialised skill can be a selling point (but again it depends if that skill/job is truly in demand). One place I worked at in Adelaide, advertised a role and we had one applicant. The person was perfect, so one applicant was all we needed.

 

I guess, if I was your husband, I would be asking myself how much does my job mean to me. Is he willing to do something else if there are not the jobs in Adelaide. This is the question where people have to be really honest with themselves and their family before they come, I have known managers from the UK come here and do much lower level jobs, but they were ok about doing it to bring in the money or they came to Australia and fancied a change.

We have age discrimination laws to protect older workers. In aged care facilities there is always nursing opportunities.

 

Usually planners with experienced are a valuable resource.

Hi Sazzy, you are not too old to move to Australia, I was 49 and husband 51 when we emigrated 6 years ago. I am a nurse and husband retrained as disability support worker. We have become citizens and have a good life here. If you do not try it you will always wonder if you missed out.

What is a chain Migrstion visa? Do you have a visa number for it? I've never heard of it.
