Newbie just starting the process

Hello to you all, just started the initial steps in calling it a day in the UK and moving to OZ. We are apparently going for a 175 skilled independent visa. Wife was a little apprehensive at first but I think she has come round to the idea, if it doesn't work out I suppose we can always come back. Our intentions are keeping our house in the UK initially but taking a lump sum out of it to help finance us down under. If all goes well then eventually sell up. We have two children ages 12 and 11 and are obviously concerned about education and good schools. Any advice about suburbs around adelaide, schooling, jobs, lifestyle etc would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Stuart and welcome to PIA,

 

Make sure Sally has not just come round to the idea but 'is well up for it'. If one of you goes just to keep the other one happy then it might not turn out to be the dream move you think it is.

What occupation are you applying with?

Suburbs really are a personal choice and if you search on here you will find loads of info.

Also have a look at www.adelaidebound.com you will find it very useful.

I think she realises now you only get one life and that is too short so what have we to lose. Initially we wouldn't sell up in the UK but would take a lump sum out of the property to assist with the expenses down under. If it didnt work out for us then at least we have a family home back in the UK with a small mortgage to fall back on, alternatively if after 3/5 years we decide it was the right move then we would sell up and be financially secure in OZ. the migration company I will be using to handle my visa suggested because my wife is a Specialist Nurse Practioner in Pallative care with a degree and currently studying for a masters degree to use her as the main person on the application form as it would be cheaper. I am involved in the elctro technical industry, HNC Electrical/Electronic Engineering plus some Occupational Health & Safety Qualifications and they advised me it would cost more to have my skills assessed compared to my wife's !!! anyway all we need to do now is sign the forms and pay the first installment. I am grateful for any information anyone has.

Hi Django, thanks for the information regarding the nurse skills assessment. I am assuming we would still have to apply for a permanent visa though?

Yeah but that is a doddle to do yourself. We did the whole thing without an agent. Get your OH registered first, then do the modified skill assessment and then finally lodge your visa application. Why pay an agent shed loads of cash to fill out forms. This is why they advised you to go with your wife's skills as it is one of the easiest occupations to process. Money for nothing for the agent.

Hi welcome to PIA - we have kids similar age to yours (13, 11 and a little one who's 6!) . We are also concerned about the kids settling at school etc but it's only natural to want the best for your kids (hence the reason for the move in the first place!). Let's just hope they thank us for it in the long run!! Good luck with your visa app!
